This photo of Paul Bremer in Iraq perfectly depicts our position there: sitting on a throne that is in fact a cheap plastic lawn chair.

The article which it illustrates, "America's Vulnerable Imperialism," can be found here:

I have one of those thrones myself. It's available at Home Depot as a kit for $49 but it takes
$87 billion to install it.

Nothing says 'style' more then a suit and army boots.

Speaking after visiting US troops in Afghanistan and Iraq, the former First Lady said: "We need more [military police], we need more intelligence, we need more civil affairs, we need a bigger presence [in Iraq].

The only limit to our realization of tomorrow will be our doubts of today.

Fashionista

"Look, the whole boots-and-suits thing just isn't working. You're in the desert, for goodness sake. Some casual khaki, a kicky print shirt, and sandals would be much better for you."

Apparently Bremmer likes the suit and boots look so much that he showed up at a NATO meeting in Brussels wearing his boots instead of dress shoes.

Anyone in his position would be in a bind considering the media scrutiny!
Wear khakis and he would be criticized as trying to look like a member of the military.
Suits probably look more official to Iraqis, altho I think a sports coat, shirt and slacks might seem more appropriate.
The boots, however, are probably an absolute necessity considering the country's rough roads and streets - what would it look like in the press if he stumbled or fell or twisted his ankle?
What would the media report if his shoes needed a shine?

Oh, by the way, re those plastic chairs: Some years ago when resin was a new concept in easy care cheap outdoor furniture, we bought a bunch. Even bought cushions to alleviate sunburned posteriors.
Over the course of travels to South America, Europe and the Middle East, we noted the chairs EVERYWHERE - slums, back alleys, outdoor restaurants, in homes, etc. etc. They are indestructible which probably explains their presence in Iraq. The chairs will be in the world's landfills longer than diapers!
Ours are now stored out of sight and used only for party spill-over!

I think many people are missing the real point of this photo-op, which is the legion of Iraqi troops behind him.

Rumor has it this turkey was stuffed with missing Al Gore votes from the last Florida Presidential election.

Recipe from the Gov. Jeb Bush Good Ol' Boy Cookbook!

The turkey was fake. It was a display. In Bush's defense, his spokespeople say they often stage things to indicate his attitudes and stances. In other words, the image of the President he presents is not the truth, but based on a true story.
