My neighbors, who are good people, have had an ongoing pipe leak for a year+ in their front yard that trickles down their drive and over to our front walk. In the summer, although annoying, it's not bad because the water evaporates quickly, but now it's icing up and it's driving me mad! What should I do? I suppose if they had the money to fix it, they would have. I'm trying to curb potential liability from slips/falls and I also hate the way it looks. Any ideas on how to approach this?

Call the town engineering dept. and make sure it's a pipe leak first. We have a house on our street that has water always gurgling out onto the sidewalk and it turns out the problem is an underground spring. Doug Ball and his assistants were very helpful and came out the day I made the call.

We had NJAmerican water come out and inspect our main water pipe that connected to the street and they discovered there was a slow leak going for years that they fixed gratis, a bonus is that my water bills have been cut in half!

I'm not an expert in this stuff, that's just my experience, the engineer's office will point you in the right direction.

I suggest you talk to your neighbor and ask what he/she knows about the leak. It may become evident what the solution is. But I also suggest you see this through to the end. You do deserve to have an ice-less walkway.

Calling the town engineer is a good start. I know that my neighbors are aware of this problem because they've talked to me about it last summer and more importantly, their driveway is a sheet of ice during the winter. This is going on two years now and I'm just hoping they want the leak fixed as much as I do.

Let me guess, you're in South Orange off Ridgewood, right?

Another consideration is, someone's paying for that water. If not, and of more interest to the water company, they're not getting paid for that water!
