FedEx. Ugly is the vivid uniforms of UPS. Plus, the story (myth?) behind FedEx as it became what it is today is great. Fred Smith goes to Vegas and wins, making payroll and keeping his company going when it almost caved. A company that I believe he envisioned in biz school, wrote a paper on it and got a failing grade.

I think he got a "C" grade, but your point is still valid, too. You gotta love a story like that.

Eventually, FedEx had to give up the single hub system, but that's OK, because they still do a good job.

UPS, because Fedex ground is a non-employee private arrangement, and if they are supposed to deliver your computer, they will refuse to do so unless you are home to sign, even if you leave a typed, signed letter giving them permission, and you will go balistic after three days of phone calls and begging, and tell them "Fine, send it back to Apple, I'm not taking a day off from work! even though I'm telling you to put it on my enclosed, totally safe porch" and then they will finally leave it.

I've always liked the FedEx logo. Particularly the hidden arrow in the type:

If you don't have a shipping department or a doorman or something like that UPS is a pain. You have to be around or deal with those stupid post-its.

Fedex has only once lost a package on me, and very rarely have they been late. If something's important I always use Fedex. They are expensive though.

And one of the first things you learn in business is that you never put anything critical or time-sensitive in the US Mail.

How about airborne. I have been using them for years. They cost less and do the same job.

In the big picture you can save a lot of money with Airborne, but they've let me down many times. Lots of lost packages, lots of late deliveries.

I am never home for deliveries and neither UPS nor Fedex will leave anything at my door, so I prefer USPS.

But, for those overnight packages that I must have...

The local FedEx deopt will let you pick up packages until 11pm in Union. With UPS, you usually have to go to either Newark airport or some town down the parkway to pick things up.

Both allow you to redirect packages -- great for small things that you can have redirected to your office.

Airborne Express was recently purchased by DHL...which is the best choice for international shipments.

FedEx offers a blanket release you can sign that allows them to leave packages at your door at any time without your signature. Ask your FedEx guy for the form and leave it on your doorknob. The release is good for a long as you live at that address. If you don't want to give a blanket release, you can, on a case-by-case basis, ask the sender to check the box that says "no signature required".
