On Dec 17 it's likely Bush will announce an initiave for men to return to the moon.

Just how far will he go to find these weapons of mass destruction?

sure....after the farm bill, education bill and drug bill that had bipartisan support, calls about the deficit seem hollow on both sides.

So....let's have $70B for pre-pre-pre school for everyone. And it will be free.

What do we expect to find there that wasn't there last time? Oh, the Chinese.

Why not something new and exciting, like Mars?

Talk about an act of desperation... there's nothing the administration won't do to try to distract us from their dishonesty and incompetence.

Don't go away, folks... Rummy is about to announce that Elvis has been sighted at the South Pole (in blue suede snow shoes).

The president of few press conferences and big press events. This is just propagandistic nonsense.

This seemed so absurd I thought it had to be a hoax. No such luck it seems http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,104800,00.html

Just when you think Bush can't do anything stupider . . .

According to the article:

"The return to the moon would be for the purpose of technological advancements in technology, including energy exploration and testing a military rocket engine."

So I guess this means drilling for oil on the moon?

Maybe they're looking for a nice place to hold the next meeting of Cheney's energy task force?

"Why not something new and exciting, like Mars?"

"The return to the moon would be for the purpose of technological advancements in technology, including energy exploration and testing a military rocket engine."

Actually, these two quotes have more in common than one realizes...NASA has been planning a manned mission to Mars for sometime.

There are many problems to overcome. One is the distance. It would take about 6 months to get there.

You would need a pretty big spaceship to carry everything you needed for the trip to and from the red planet.

A rocket large enough to carry all this stuff would require an enormous amount of fuel just to leave Earth's atmosphere.

If energy supplies, or the materials to make rocket fuel can be mined/made from the moons surface, then the moon could be used as a "gas station", on the way to and from Mars.

this leads to the inevitable question...will they check the oil and wash the windows without expecting a tip?

Standing on the moon
I see the battle rage below
Standing on the moon
I see the soldiers come and go
There's a metal flag beside me
Someone planted long ago
Old Glory standing stiffly
Crimson, white and indigo

We can put a man on the moon but we can't write an English sentence.

Let's let the private sector do the space travel. Isn't that how our liberatarian, anti-government age works?

Yes, it seems disengenuous of the president to suggest this, given how his administration is trying to strangle stem cell research.

someone should tell Dick Cheney you can convert stem cells into crude oil - we'll be doing more exploration than you can shake a stick at.
