Is this a "no substitutions" menu, or can we pick, cafeteria-style, from the various definitions? |

I want to reform Social Security and Teddy Kennedy doesn't. Does that make me a liberal and Teddy a conservative? Same with school choice and medicare reform. |

Communism (Freeloading): A scheme of equalizing the social conditions of life; specifically, a scheme which contemplates the abolition of inequalities in the possession of property, as by distributing all wealth equally to all, or by holding all wealth in common for the equal use and advantage of all.

quote:The community of believers was of one heart and mind, and no one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they had everything in common. ... There was no needy person among them, for those who owned property or houses would sell them, bring the proceeds of the sale, and put them at the feet of the apostles, and they were distributed to each according to need.
Acts, Ch. 4, verses 32-35. The "Liberal" and "Conservative" labels, by themselves, don't always capture the spectrum of opinions out there. |

Probably most people are moderates. I'm a Safire libcon, for sure. But unfortunately, politics has made it so the norm is to give way to the extremes, and this extremity takes form in the crazy religious right and the loony tree-hugging left. Both extremes drive me crazy, although i think the religious right even more so. It also used to be that conservatives wanted smaller government, and liberals wanted bigger government, but this line does not seem to hold true any longer. |

I posted this before ffof--there are many of us that would rally around a libcon party. But for now, a strong democratic party would make me happy--the republicans are living large, spending like drunken sailors and the democratic leadership is either not strong enough or unwilling to stand in the way. Next year, Bush is likely to win easy and republicans will probably pick up 2 Senate seats. Medicare, energy, farmers, now space?? Where's Ross Perot?? Is there a democratic leader willing to stand up to this pork?? One measure indicating gridlock is good--the stock market outperforms when there is a balance of power. The only limit to our realization of tomorrow will be our doubts of today..FDR..

Kenney - Why do you expect Bush to "win easy" in the next election? Isn't it more likely, based on the last election, that the next election will go down to the wire? |

Court, Bush has energized the base that voted for him last time, he has also won over a large amount of the undecideds that swung for Gore in 2000. This alone puts him over 50% Add in to the mix the "Terror Moms" who have replaced the "Soccer Moms" where GWB is strongly favored over any dem candidate including Hillary and you have a recipe for 4 more years. The best thing for Bush would be to run against Dean. With all the fist pounding Dean has done that now is contradicted by events it would be a landslide. I think the Dem populace will wake up and see how unelectable Dean is and in a close convention nominate Kerry. That will be a closer race, but Bush will still have the advantage and win by about 10 points. |
