My wife is a piano teacher (among many other wonderful things), but our house isn't ready yet. We're installing doors into our parlor in hopes it will soundproof the room. Can you wait? I'll ask her if she's steadfast on requiring the doors first.

Who is this for? If it's for you, and you can have a lesson during school hours, it might be feasible.

I'll ask her. But things are awfully busy in December. She's got a bunch of singing gigs, and there's other stuff going on, too. But one of us will get back to you, whether or not she's available.

Claudine Hickman on Boyden Ave (973) 762-8907 is terrific, for both kids and adults! Her style is warm and encouraging, even when she is correcting mistakes. And she teaches the gamut: theory, ear training, music history, etc. along with the basic piano instruction. She uses computer games to teach and reinforce the drier stuff.

While my kid sometimes whines about practice and occasionally tries to get out of going to a lesson because she is tired, she ALWAYS comes out of her lesson happy, proud and totally upbeat. I come out of my own lessons feeling like I just subjected my spirit to an excellent massage.

I second Claudine Hickman. My second grader started piano lessons with her in September and loves to go.

My husband who plays piano and started lessons in second grade is impressed with her technique and the fact that she teaches theory with the mechanics.

We are very pleased.

My friend Patty Kinnucane lives in Maplewood and teaches both piano and flute from her home. My daughter is taking lessons from her now and we are quite happy. She mostly teaches after school and her prices are very reasonable. Give her a call 973 761-8586. She is having a baby in Feb. but I am sure she will still be teaching.

My wife, Susan Hirsch, is a classically trained piano teacher. She still has a few openings in her schedule for new students. She is great with kids of all ages, and also teaches adults. Students come to our home in South Orange. She will be glad to speak to anyone regarding lessons. She can be reached at (973) 762-5687. She would respond herself, but is way too busy.

Another strong endorsement here for Claudine Hickman. My son loves going to lessons.

Claudine is well organized, rigorous, and systematic, but not at all doctrinaire. She seems very good at reaching little boys (and girls too, from what I hear), and makes excellent use of computer programs to teach music theory.

I've been impressed with her habit of responding to kids' individual needs & interests. For instance, whenever my son works out a melody for himself (a Billy Joel tune, a theme from a Dvorak symphony, something he learned in school) she writes out the music for him to practice in addition to whatever he's been assigned. If he composes a song of his own, she's always ready to listen, encourage, and provide extra graph paper or whatever.

A couple of times a year she holds "piano parties" at which her students get together and perform for each other, afterwards consuming quantities of cookies and candy. These are very low-stress events, unlike the more traditional recital routine, which can be pointlessly terrifying for a lot of kids.

I think she's just great, my kid has made wonderful progress and enjoys studying with her, and I'm pretty sure the other families we've referred to her would tell you the same thing.

Oh, and I know Patty Kinnucane as well. Very nice, warm person, lots of experience with kids. Definitely worth giving her a call.
