My wife and I keep trying to go to DiPietros. So far we have made it there once. The reason? They close to early, EVERY DAY. I get home from the city at around 7:30PM from work. They are already closed. If memory serves me correctly, their weekend hours are pretty slim too. Maybe keeping the shop open more often might keep em in business? |

their limited store hours are what keeps us from going there. We've been there once and the food was good. I also second the opinion that they weren't very friendly. StringsTeacher99....don't make the assumption that CatoNova hasn't been to the store because of their negative opinion. Maybe they have and that's why it's negative. AND, it's people like you who continue to feed the "this side/that side" debate with your comments |

Where does your Uncle live in Gainesville and more important were are the good bagel shops and Italian food establishments I can't remember! It's like NW 52nd Place or something. He's actually a Reverend down there and has his own church. Is name is Reverend Jeffrey Arnold. Ever heard of him? He's nuts so it wouldn't surprise me if he had a reputation :-) I haven't spoken to him in a couple of years so I couldn't help you out with the bagels...Sorry :-) |

Woah - blackcat - why the personal attack?? Please note that I did say "Check it out sometime and THEN if you still feel that way your opinion will be validated." All Cato had to do was say that he HAS been there, and his argument is completely legit. IMHO, his post came off as a general dig at some local community businesses. All I did was voice my opinion on what I think is a very quality shop. Chill, man. |

Strings - the "personal attack" was directed at you comment ..."Not a lot of people are aware that the store is there, and I'm sure some people DO know, but don't like to go to "that side" of Maplewood." If people didn't continue to use the label this side/that side, maybe we would all be better off...self fulfilling ??

Well it's true - there are people who would really rather not cross Springfield Ave, no matter how ridiculous it sounds. And as a matter of fact, I grew up and lived on "that side" of Maplewood for 21 years and my family still lives there. But this is an issue that doesn't need to be hashed out here. It wasn't meant as a negative comment, sorry if it came off that way. |

Strings - I agree that it's true. We've lived on "that side" also for the past 7 years and it always strikes a nerve when people put down the Hilton area like it was the slums/low class. Maybe the people that degrade this side have underlying problems with color. I have wonderful neighbors of all colors and love my home very much.

DiPietro's is great...real home made sausage and macaroni and the mozzarella is to die for--especially when you get it warm. I've tired Antonio's--I bought an eggplant pie there once cost $8.00--it tasted like flour--it was aweful--I had to throw it out. |

I was in DiPietro's a few times before Christmas when they are probably at their busiest during the year (then and Easter time). I go there regularly. Is it fancy looking and all white and chrome? Hardly. Is the food there good? Very. The folks there have always been pleasant and Signora DiPietro has always been wonderful with my children since they were babies whenever I bring them in. I was in there Christmas Eve and sure there was a long line, and business seemed brisk, but speaking with the owner, Italian American enclaves and communities dont exist like they used to, and people dont cook as much as they used to and look for more prepared foods, and they still do a good business during the holidays but it has to sustain them now through slower months..there isnt the consistent business like there once was. It was a little sad though because the majority of people waiting in line were older than me, and a few were in my age bracket and noone there was younger than me. I noticed the same thing the day before picking up a meat order at Lutz's, a German butcher in Union..I was considerably younger than most of the patrons. It's sad to think that most of the patrons for these sorts of establishments, and the establishments themselves, may literally be dying breeds. Maybe thats not such a big deal to alot of people, maybe these places dont appeal to alot of people on a regular basis or at all, but when I finally got to the counter at DiPietro's on Christmas Eve after waiting and the owner apologized, I said, no reason to apologize, I didnt mind the wait, because this is the sort of place I grew up going to all the time, its a part of my life that I am very familiar with. I hope to be able to keep patronizing DiPietro's for a long time to come. |

I love DiPietrio's too. Great food like Mom and Grandma used to make, both gone now and I am too busy to cook. I personally have never had a problem with the DiPeitro's- I find them friendly and very hard working. Everytime I visit the shop it's a trip back to the kitchen's of the 1960's in my Grandmother's house. And I mean kitchens- a canning kitchen and a family kitchen, first generation Italian... Maybe another hour of business a day would help them stay in business. Even if they stayed open Tuesdays and Thursdays until 6:30. But I know they are probably up at the crack of dawn and they are getting older. Whatever happens my family has loved their homemade foods for the last sixteen years. I hope they don't close their doors. |
