On this date in 1980, at 10:47 PM EST, John Lennon was murdered as he and Yoko returned home from the recording studio, where they had been putting some finishing touches on Yoko's song "Walking on Thin Ice."

Yoko lost her husband, Sean and Julian lost their father, and the rest of the world lost John Lennon the artist.

Rest in peace, John. Hope you and George are enjoying your time together.

Quick, who wrote Here Comes the Sun? Just read the Abbey Road cover last night...George. I was surprised.

I'm always surprised that so many of my favorite Beatles songs were written by George. He doesn't get the credit that he deserves.

For some reason, must be my unconscious, I've been playing The Late Great Johnny Ace by Paul Simon today. Haven't listened to it in quite a while.
Somehow, I must have remembered.

Same here. My son was talking about "Catcher In The Rye" this morning, and it reminded me of Lennon's murder.

Weird.

I remember my mother coming in my room in tears to tell me John Lennon was shot. The next morning I was taking "behind the wheel" at my high school and all of us in the car were very upset...especially the teacher. A very sad day.

It's hard to believe that it's been 24 years.

It's still hard to believe that he was only 23 when he took the stage on 2/9/64.

Sad.

Wanna feel old? Sean turned 29 this year. He's as old as John was when the Beatles recorded Abbey Road. Julian is 41 -- a year older than John was when he was killed.

jjk, yup, that does it, I do feel really old thinking about what you wrote. UNTIL I cue up Abbey Road - takes me right back in about half a minute, probably always will.

Here comes the sun!

Such a sad anniversary, though. I remember the day, traveling on business with people who were just enough older not to "get it." Personally, I felt as though someone had shot Santa Claus.

People ask me about that night and I still can't talk about it much. Too painful. I was still living with my Mom then, on the upper west side, around a mile from the Dakota. I was there all night that night.

I was lucky enough to have seen John, Yoko and Sean a few times over the years. Since I knew he lived in the neighborhood I'd tried to mentally prepare myself for the possibility of meeting him - came up with witty things to say, etc. Of course when it happened it all went out the window and I became a babbling idiot. Oh well. I got to shake his hand and talk to him a little, so I have that memory. It also turned out that he and I were getting our hair cut at the same place.

The last time I saw him was in the summer of '79. I was coming out of the subway at 72nd Street, and I took the exit that comes out across the street from the Dakota. I looked over and he was out front playing with Sean, who was then not quite 4. A couple of teenage girls came by and were chatting with him. I could see from John's body language that he was in a good mood and was enjoying the moment. I wanted to go over but as fate had it, I was wearing a John Lennon t-shirt that day and I knew he'd say something funny like "Hey look, that's Paul McCartney, isn't it!" and I'd have stood there tongue-tied. So I figured I'd catch him some other time and I walked off. I never saw him again.

Speaking of George, if you get a chance, DO rent the DVD entitled "Concert for George." It's amazing. I can't put into words how wonderful this DVD is. My friend Liz cried watching it. If you like[d] George or the Beatles, it's up your street. (I never had a favorite - I loved them all.) Ringo makes an appearance and he's so charming, so unaffected. Paul is there too for a few numbers. The first 20 minutes is a very compelling performance by Ravi Shankar's daughter Anoushka and an Indian orchestra - teriffic stuff. Stay with it. The rest is hosted by Eric Clapton. I'ver rerented it a few times from Netflix. Wonderful wonderful wonderful.

They just replayed that concert the other night on channel 13.
I was in school the day I heard of Lennon's death, it was announced over the loudspeakers to every classroom.

The Concert for George was tremendous. Clapton did an amazing job with it.

The DVD package comes with two disks. One contains the theatrical film (the version that was shown on PBS recently). The other disk contains the full concert from start to finish, and nothing but the concert (no interviews, rehearsal footage, etc.).

It really is a great film and was a magnificently done tribute. I cried too -- during Joe Brown's performance at the end.

Isn't it amazing that after all these years the lyrics to the Christmas Song are so appropriate: War is over if you want it......

Another endorsement for Concert for George. Watch the whole show and don't cheat by skipping the Indian music either. It really sets the mood.

So this is Christmas
And what have you done?
Another year over
And a new one just begun

And so this is Christmas
I hope you have fun
The near and the dear one
The old and the young.

A very Merry Christmas
And a Happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one
Without any fear

And so this is Christmas
For weak and for strong
For rich and the poor ones
The road is so long

And so Happy Christmas
For black and for white
For yellow and red ones
Let's stop all the fight.

A very Merry Christmas
And a Happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one
Without any fear

So this is Christmas
And what have you done?
Another year over
And a new one just begun

And so Happy Christmas
I hope you have fun
The near and the dear one
The old and the young.

A very Merry Christmas
And a Happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one
Without any fear

War is over!
If you want it
War is over!
War is over, Now!

I'll be remembering the genius of John (and George and Paul and Ringo) tonight at the Fab Faux show at the Bowery Ballroom..the best way to remember them is to hear the music performed like it ought to be. As the song goes..."the word is love".

There is a beautiful new children's picture book about John Lennon (I think it is autobiographical, but not sure). Just saw it yesterday at B&N.
