My husband and I are looking for ideas for our New Year Eve plans. We did not want to do the usual - hanging out with friends routine. What are you planning to do this new years eve?

Hang out with friends, and many, many children. |

Many people enjoy the SO/M First Night celebrations. I think that they are being held at South Orange Middle School this year, but perhaps someone who is "in the know" can confirm or correct this info ... |

I think it is at SOMS. A flyer came home in the back packs this week. If I remember correctly, it's from 3pm to 10pm, and there are lots of activities and performances. Tickets are available at a few local merchants, like Mail Boxes Etc, Robin Hutchins Gallery, etc. We've never done it. |

There are First Night celebrations in many communities around the country and the unifying theme is to provide an alcohol-free New Year's Eve celebration. I believe that ours has been going for well over ten years. There are similar events in other towns in the area, including Summit and Morristown, I believe. I haven't been for a few years, but we always enjoyed it when we were in town and able to go. There is quite a variety of performances. The website link posted earlier will give you all those details. In years past, there was a fireworks display at midnight, but I don't see anything about that here, so perhaps that is no longer the case. You buy one button per person which admits you to all of the events and performances. |

I think the flyer said the fireworks were 7pm at Flood's Hill. |

Thanks to this thread H2TA is now thinking about maybe putting together a small inexpensive New Years Eve Party for anyone who wants to get out for some fun but wants to stay close to home... A nice buffet of Italian dishes, salads, breads, some snacks and finger foods, desserts and coffee, BYO, hats and noisemakers, live music, some dancing... lets say for $35.00 a person? Any interest for about forty/fifty people or so? Give us a call or let us know on line if there’s any interest.

If you want fancy, expensive and close Serenade is having two different NYE sittings: http://restaurantserenade.kis-hosting.com/index.php I think they are having dancing as well. Tres expensive though. |

I like the first night idea but we LIKE alcohol!! Alcohol free while admirable; is not for us as yet. So what do the rest of the people do? Stay home? Watch TV? Ball drop? I don't know... Anyone care to share? |

This is the first year we will be going out and not "hanging out with friends". I was originally thinking about going to a nice, late dinner in NYC (we are not ones for dancing or the like). Now I've decided I am too lazy to go into NYC and don't want to be that far away from the kids (despite the babysitter being my mom) so we are going to do a more casual movie and dinner locally. Haven't decided where to go yet though. Good luck! |

We are flying home from vacation NYE - so I plan on walking in the door about 11:30 PM and falling into bed. The problem is drinking and driving and that's why I usually like to stay very close to home NYE and mellow. Maybe go to a nice dinner in Hoboken and hit a few bars? |

Yes. We have already made reservations. We were told that the plan is for a latish dinner, music and dancing. BYOB. Perhaps either Art or Unart would care to elaborate. |

Maybe drive around South Orange and see the spectacular lights of South Orange Illumination - 2004! I will keep you updated on specific streets to check out, but right now, I can definitely tell you to drive down Redmond Road, Floods Hill, Tillou Rd, Montrose, Vose Ave., Prospect and Crest Drive. And don't forget to buy Luminaries for your own home!!!!

Our very best New Year's Eve celebrations were spent at home with our kids and nieces & nephews... a total of 13. We played games, watched movies, played music, and in the morning I made waffles and let them put ice cream and toppings on them. Even when the kids got older, they still came. One year our 18 year old nephew showed up at 3 a.m. (a case of beer in hand - but he was sober). Eventually, they all grew up - more than half of them are married.... we're waiting for the 5 great-nephews & neice to get old enough to come play. |

"Perhaps either Art or Unart would care to elaborate." OK... Well as Joan said, a 9PM to 11PM buffet, soda, set ups, BYO, hats, noisemakers, live music, some dancing... plus we'll be offering breakfast, ham & eggs, pancakes, and coffee at the end of the night. We believe the price should cover our costs, if not Jamie and Dave can chip in with all that Christmas bonus it appears they're getting. We figured what the hell, we don't want to have a house party this year and we would rather stay local. Maybe even catch a few early First Night events. We're not interested in driving, dressing up or having a big expensive dinner either, so we decided after reading this post that having a party at the cafe for a few friends and some locals might be fun for a change. We still have room for about 12 or so more couples if anyone is interested... |

Pippi, Thanks for asking, I think that you'll find that ajc posted the following in a previous post: "A nice buffet of Italian dishes, salads, breads, some snacks and finger foods, desserts and coffee, BYO, hats and noisemakers, live music, some dancing... lets say for $35.00 a person?" So, my question is, does that seem like a good deal to you or should we remove a few of the amenities and make it a little less expensive per person or add a few more and bring the price up? Since this is our first New Years at H2TA, and and all thoughts and/or suggestions will be much appreciated. Art |

I'm going for a late dinner at American Fare. Bringing some champagne for the foie gras and caviar. Also bringing wine for the dinner. Not sure if they have seats left, but a nice alternative to Jocelynes. |

My signifigent other and I will also be going to American Fare, early seating tho, avoid the rush and the crowds sort of thing. Then home again, home again lickety split.I love the fact that they are possibly the only good restaurant that does an ala carte menu on new years and doesn't raise their prices to take advantage of their customers. |

OK, all the fuss is over. So what really are your plans for the New Year? They say half the fun is getting there, so now that we've made it to 2005 is anyone willing to share some of their plans on what they'll do or won't do this year around MOL. I'll start out with a one. I plan to be a little easier going this year, therefore I will ignor those who engage me in on-line personal attacks, and promise "NOT" to challenge anyone to another dual in Ricalton Square... |
