Jet, I just moved to Maplewood 2 months ago, so I wouldn't be privy to that information.

well, jet, instead of adding uninteresting or derogatory comments, why don't you go out and try these places for yourself and then form your own opinion.IMHO, too many people listen to too few people on this site

we love burnett's and probably get take out from there every other week.

why is it empty? could be because more people are ordering take out or delivery than hanging out in the restaurant. or it could be they openned the second restaurant too close to the first and there aren't enough patrons in the area to adequately support both restaurants. who knows.

Or it could be that not enough of residents in Maplewood know about it.

We love the food and the location. We've had take out a zillion times - before Springfield Ave from the Union one. However, the service was horrific when we ate in. It was packed with people and they just weren't coordinating. The wait staff seemed inexperienced although really pleasant. We talked about it with the hostess and will definitely go back again to see if they have ironed out their routines. They are lovely people and there are many different things to try on the menu.

Stubelou.. My wife & I eat out @ least 4 nights a week in our local establishments {having dinner @ Lot 15 tonite} I was good friends with Kurt who ran the last place @ that location, I am well known @ all the local eating establishments . If you happen to see a black & white Siberian Husky tied up outside one our establishments stop in & ask for me I'll be glad to give you a dissertation on derogatory comments.

not throwing anything, just observing how many people seem to make up their minds about the local businesses by what they read here on mol.also observing the same names again and again blasting some of these places, I don't think it's fair that some get bad reputations by this word of mouth as it were. I believe in free speech but, having just moved here four years ago, and reading these threads it seems to me that, online at least, there are a lot more mean spirited people in this area than I have met face to face.
I think if you don't have something positive to say, maybe you shouldn't say anything. just the way I was raised, would not want to unduly influence anyone with etiquette and/or good manners.

Doesn't seem like you have anything good to say, so might I suggest, follow your own advise.

Jet wasn't bad mouthing BurnettBBQ, he made an observation based on facts. The last two restaurants in that location failed. Which is a shame, but the truth.

I find that I'm sometimes inclined to try a place that's badmouthed online just to see if it's really as awful as people say... sometimes it is and sometimes it isn't. Don't they say there's no such thing as bad publicity?

I've yet to try Burnett BBQ. I've personally heard more good things about it than bad things. Do they deliver to South Orange?

Before the Burnett BBQ on Springfield opened up, my family frequently got take-out from the one on Stuyvessant and, although I do not particularly like Portugese BBQ, they all loved it! They have since tried the one on Springfield and enjoy it as much. It probably just needs a bit more exposure to get as busy as it's predecessor.

Springfield Avenue needs more publicity. Too many people still view it as the step child commercial district in town. If more people visited SA on a regular basis and did at least some of their shopping there, businesses like Burnett BBQ would have a better chance of succeeding.

My fiancee' and I went to Burnett BBQ tonight for dinner. Several tables were occupied and even more were by the time we left at 7:30pm. We had the steak sandwich and the chicken/ribs combo with the salad bar. Everything was great. The veggies were fresh, the meats were tender and delicious. The salad bar was also very fresh, although do not expect more than salad. Service was polite and accomodating, but not hovering. I loved that he brought a pitcher of water to the table and left it! I never needed to call the waiter over for a refill. We will definitely be back for more!

We, too, just returned from Burnett BBQ. The food was excellent. Reminds me of some of the little Portuguese places on the side streets in the Ironbound (food, not the atmosphere).

I had the shrimp & rice; I stuffed myself silly and still brought most of it home. TS ordered the chicken & rice. There was a piece of calamari in it (accident) & she is allergic to seafood, so they made her another one. The bread was wonderful; had to take it off the table before I ate the whole loaf. Light center, chewy crust. And it's BYOB, always a plus in my book.

My only complaint is that at a table across the restaurant, two patrons lit up their after-dinner cigs & a waiter at the end of his shift lit up, too. This all happened at closing, so maybe there really isn't smoking earlier in the evening. But, smoking would keep me a take-out customer instead of eat-in. Good news, I guess, for smokers who can't find anywhere to eat where they can smoke.

With tip, the bill came to about what we paid for mediocre Chinese at Waterlillies last week (when did they close?) and we have enough leftovers to feed both of us all weekend.

We were also there last night- probably around the same time as teach75. We ordered 2 entrees for 2 adults and 2 children (they are only 3 1/2 and 1 so don't eat too much) and there was still about 1 entree worth of food to take home. And the chicken was even yummier today.

We probably will take out next time- just cause it's easier for us to eat at home with the two little ones.

Great value and great food.

I really don't understand the negative attitude that so many have about Springfield Avenue. Is it quaint? No, not really. But does it have a number of really useful businesses on it that I frequent often? Of course:

Dunkin Donuts
Food Of Our Own Design (excellent desserts)
DiPietro's
Burnett Barbeque
Spring Garden (or whatever the Chinese Restaurant is that we order from...can't think)
Jay's Grill
Quick Check

Just to name a few. And no, they're not all in Maplewood, but that doesn't matter to me. It's important that SA is successful beyond our borders, too.

Just my two cents in what is clearly the wrong thread. Tnx.

Not to mention:
Sayle & Wimmer Printing
NetNomads
Topf's Pharmacy (of which I've become a great fan)
The Beaded Path
Wooden You Know

and one of the banks (can't remember which) only charges $1.50 for "foreign" ATM cards

Why does Springfield Ave. have such a bad reputation? Like Ronzio, we stop at the Dunkin Donuts all the time.

Oh God. See, Earlster -- you feel the need to bring up something that happened in October of 2003. Why do you need to ruin a nice thread about Springfield Avenue? Cars get stolen everywhere - even right in Millburn. We do hope businesses with dark parking lots have some sort of security. It's all fun and games until someone gets carjacked.

And on a lighter note.... (thread drift)

If you have Rx insurance and have never gone to Topfs because you assumed they didn't take it, think again. They take most major prescription insurance (Medco, Caremark). I love them and love the fact that (until this last job change) I could actually support a neighborhood pharmacist. They are very nice and if you call ahead you never have to wait.

I regret that I no longer have a plan that they take.

There are few enough of the neighborhood pharmacies left, so support them if you can!

Alg & Earl - carry on....

I got the menu from Burnett BBQ and it didn't look that cheap or interesting to me.

You've got to be kidding!

We went there for the first time for takeout on Monday and order 2 bbq rib dinners (that could feed 2 adults & 2 kids). To me, it tasted like a homecook meal. Excellent and cheap. Cheaper than burger Kings across the street! BBQ ribs with rice and vegetables…$6.50!

Burger & fries meal, around the same and above.

Kuddos to the folks who suggested this restaurant. We WILL BE BACK!

I think it depends what you order there. My kids' meals were pretty big and inexpensive, but I asked my waiter to recommend a shrimp dish and whatever he recommended cost $16 for 3 large, but not SO large bbq'd shrimp. That, plus the uninteresting sides (I asked for rice and beans but that had sausage in it so instead I got the rice and boiled vegetables—tasteless) and the mediocre salad bar, and it wasn't worth it for me. My husband couldn't make it that night and he really wants to try it, so I'd stick with a lesser expensive fish dish and deal with it that way. (I don't eat meat.)

That was my comment -- the menu I saw -- I guess it was somewhere else (or I was drunk) I thought an entree was something like $16.95??? I couldn't figure what people were talking about. So, I was wrong I guess.

Well, maybe you were drunk but there are entrees about that price. (See my post above.) I guess if you stick with the basics it's inexpensive and tasty, so it's an option instead of the MapleLeaf.

burnettt bbq, went sunday, I don't think that they have prices over $13.00, if they used some seasonings, salt even, then they might have to raise their prices.what we got was not bad, it just wasn't good either. maybe they have their "b" team on sunday. could not recomend them but i don't think i would shred either
