Has anyone ever heard of a town (Maplewood?) that gives gifts to the 1st baby born in the New Year? My mother has told me of this because my wife and I are expecting in the beginning of January. I had never heard of such a thing, so I was wondering if anyone else has. By the way, these gifts supposedly come from various businesses in town. |

You'll see information about it in the News Record -- the local merchants give gifts to the first Maplewood and first South Orange baby born -- pictures, stationary -- some very sweet things. Our local merchants are super! |

Our daughter was the first child born in MWD in 2002. The NR is usually checking the close by hospitals for children born to MWD and SO residents. Our realtor told us about this, and we called the NR ourselves, since we used a hospital in Montclair and they hadn't checked with them.
It's a great little program supported by mostly local merchants. We got a free family portrait, a personlized blanket and some other stuff.
They also put your picture on the front page of the NR for your 15 minutes of fame. |

Thanks for the responses, but the editor of the News-Record said the publisher has decided not to do this "1st baby" announcement this year.
Oh well.

Perhaps somebody can sue them for infrigement on thier first babyhood of the year rights.
