Try the all-u-can-eat buffet next to the wine shop at Essex Green, or try SamPan on Millburn Avenue in Millburn, or Bill & Harry for take-out.

BTW: Gut Yuntif!

Hunan Spring is our favorite Christmas Eve spot. It's on Morris Ave in Springfield, west of Springfield Avenue on the westbound side.

Debby:

We were there last night and the place was nearly empty. Charlie even took the time to sit at the booth with us for a while and wish us a happy holiday. I really like the way he and Cynthia make their customers feel like family.

Tried the new Jade Gourmet on Millburn Avenue tonight & enjoyed it very much!

We also went to "Taste of Asia" last night & were horribly disapppointed. Taste of Asia has a very limited menu, small portions, bland decor & food, high prices & no fortune cookies.

Jade Gourmet has a very broad menu, reasonable prices, pleasant decor, good sized portions & very tasty food. I'd recommend you checking it out.

Joan - I miss Charlie. There's nothing like that down here. Does he still have the John Davidson picture by the register?

Tast of Asia isn't Chinese, Drive.
You'd probably be happier at the old Alex Eng.

Never said it was, don.

For Asian food, "Taste of Asia" is mediocre at best. Jade Gourmet in Millburn or Sampan in Millburn are much better.

Today it is almost impossible to have a Chinese meal in America and Canada without finishing with a Fortune Cookie.

No accounting for some peoples(lack of) taste.

Sampan is good, if a little sad.
Never been to Jade Gourmet.
But Taste of Asia has a proven track record in three towns in New Jersey. Not bad for a place you describe as mediocre.

Nancy,

I know you were ultimately responsible for bringing "Taste of Asia" to South Orange. I REALLY wanted to like it...I really did, but I've now been there 3 times & each time come away unimpressed. I hope it's successful, but I just don't see myself going back frequently.

I agree Sampan is sad because it is always empty. Although, I think the food is great & quite different from the "typical" Asian place.

I saw "The Life Aquatic" yesterday (loved it -- Billy Murray is a national treasure imho) while my kids went to "Lemony Snicket." Merry Christmas, all!

Debby:

The major picture attraction Charlie has these these days is a photograph of the waters of hurricane Floyd as they flowed past the entrance to the restuarant.

What is Sampan's problem!? Is it the look of the building? It's certainly not the food.

My Pet Theories: Several possibilities present themselves.
(A)Folks really liked dining in and taking out from Chan's Palace (the preceding eatery in the space), and just don't think the change in cuisine (no more Cantonese, Grumpy's Beef, etc) makes 'em as comfortable, &/or
(2)Millburn isn't culinarily adventurous to wholeheartedly embrace the varied Asian fare on the new menu, and not enough potential customers in surrounding towns even know the place exists, &/or
(C)Conservative Millburn-Short Hillians are freaked out by the higher prices when coupled with the punk-rock appearance of some of the wait staff, &/or
(D)A-Frames are just so "60's"...

-s.

BTW: Maybe there are just too many Asian restaurants around, and it's time to bring back the I-HOP.

Re Sampan: the one time we ate there, they sat us at one of those two little tables back by the entrance. No pictures on the wall, no plants, nothing to look at but the blank wall. Food was OK, but I've had better. It wasn't crowded, and the main room looked much more inviting, but that's where they put us. Haven't been motivated to go back. Perhaps it has improved since then. For their prices, I'd like at least a poster on the wall!
