Am I the only one who thinks a real good neighborhood bakery would be great in the village? I seem to recall that there was one there many years ago 15+? Could it have been where American Fare now is? |

You are thinking of Peters, a real treasure whose loss was deeply felt when the original owner retired. Suburban in Millburn was a pretty good substitute but it closed several years ago. We were in Summit a few weeks ago and found to our dismay that Trosts has also closed. Unfortunately, full service bakeries seem to be a dying breed in our area. I agree that a good full service bakery would be a good addition in the village. |

Joe - check out Food Of Our Own Design - not in the Village - but not too far away - on Springfield Avenue: http://www.foodofourowndesign.com I just put in an order for one of their holiday cakes today. I think everyone misses Peters Bakery. Mr. & Mrs. Peters still live in the Village - they're my landlords, I live above them - above Maplewood Stationers. |

Yes, FOOOD! I just wish they sold those bar cookies in smaller quantities! I am going to get an extra freezer just so I can keep a few trays of those on hand.

No but Cait&Abby's is Kosher and really good. I don't usually like Pesadica(sp)baked goods, but their's are excellent. |

My kids LOVED the cupcakes at Peters - I didn't know they still lived in town. I hope they are happy to realize how fondly we all remember their bakery. Lots of happy memories, birthday cakes and fun times were connected to them! |

I LOVED Peters'! I think Cait & Abby has Kosher le Pesach stuff, but not technically, because they don't change their bakeware.. correct me if I'm wrong. I go to Sonny Amster's in the Millburn "Mall" (right next to Tabachnick's near Drug Fair) -- they have THE best bagels (always have -- reaaal bagels) and the best cheese buns.. and they have Kosher le Pesach stuff too. Mmmm..... no! slaps hand away from cookie! Hehe. |

Check out Sonny Amster's Bakery in the Millburn "Mall." The Russian rye, babka, cheese and almond danish are killer. The surly counter help is also entertaining. Be sure to bop on down to Syd's for a grilled hot dog afterwards. |

I know it's not the subject of the thread, but Czele just reminded me....Syd's grilled beef hot dogs are great! Some say that they are the best in NJ. While there has been a change of ownership in the past few years, the food is still just as good. The Millburn Mall needs some help in the appearance department, but it still has some great old time establishments that sell excellent food like Sonny Amster's (which used to be Wiglers Bakery until the early 80s), Tabachnik's, and Syd's. Many of the old-timers that frequent these places have been going to them for years. Here's a shot of Syd's and their famous dogs: http://hollyeats.com/Syds.htm http://www.digitalcity.com/northjersey/entertainment/venue.adp?sbid=134083&type= overview

It a filled cake, rolled into the shape of a log - usually chocolate on chocolate. Try Cait & Abby's in S. Orange or maybe Cafe Beethoven in Chatham. |

Is a 'Bouche de Noel' the same as what we Brits would call a 'Yule Log'? (A Yule Log is a chocolate filled Swiss Roll cake inside a chocolate butter-cream covering, lightly dusted with icing sugar to resemble frost and shaped like a log or branch). They are usually decorated with a sprig of holly. A friend of mine brought one out at teatime last Sunday, but she bought it at Wholefoods on the Chatham/Madison border....I don't know if they have them at the smaller Millburn branch. It looked beautiful (and was probably expensive!) but was absolutely delicious. Hey - it's 'Yuletide' aka the 'Winter Solstice' today....the shortest hours of daylight of the year. |

Miss L -- Yup. Sounds like what I am talking about! We always had ones which were decorated with marzipan mushrooms -- my sisters and I would fight over them (the shrooms). I'll give Whole Foods a call. Thanks. |
