Claire! You must be 'clair'voyant. That was exactly my thought at that moment. But I got called away and could not post then. |

Nan and Mjc: Maplecrest Hardware went out of business because Jules retired and Scott wanted to pursue his interest in music more than he wanted to take over the hardware business. I think the store had enough of a local following to have remained in operation despite the opening of Home Depot in the area. Seems like the timing in this case was coincidental. |

peter Seaford -- You may be new to town, but your observations about SA are right on - SA is changing, but it currently has a hardscrabble look and feel to it. As to why Vic DeLuca is such a nay sayer...He was once the Mayor of Maplewood. DeLuca ran for re-election 2 years ago and lost by a wide margin. Local political wonks predict he's positioning himself to run for the Township Committee again. In a nutshell DeLuca is basically is against anything our current Mayor Profeta champions. I'll probably get attacked now -- oh well, that's what happens when people speak out against Vic's tactics. He's a political animal and will do or say whatever he can to cobble together a "cause" -- what's best for Vic DeLuca is his first priority. |

Lydia, Keep in mind that Deluca lives on Lexington Ave (last I heard). Although I did not vote for him, one has to believe that he has the best interests in mind when it involves the redevelopment of SA. |

Fred first was a Republican. Then he ran as an Independent. He lost. He then said he'd never run as a Democrat, but he did. Moreover, he ran with turncoat Kathy Leventhal, who was on Vic's side until opportunity reared its head and she decided it's better to win than be loyal. So he ran as a Democrat and finally won. The question isn't only what won't Vic say to win. It's also what party won't Fred join to win.

Now that we can nullify both sides as opportunistic politicians, perhaps we can get down to issues? |

Once again DeLuca has shown his true colors by rejecting what is clearly in the best interests of Maplewood and trying to divide our community. Mayor Profeta is doing a great job and redevelopment of Springfield Avenue will help those who live in the Hilton neighborhood more than anyone else in the town. DeLuca is oppposed to it because if Springfield Avenue improves and values in the Hilton area increase, he won't be able to continue to pit east versus west and his base of supporters (whomever they may still be) will erode even further. I wish he would start using his efforts to do something good for Maplewood instead of continuing to play politics with our future. Thank heaven he's completely unelectable and we won't ever have to have him on the TC again. |

Dave, The least you can do is be a little objective and accurate: 1) Kathy did not run with Fred. Ian did 2) There are plenty of Democrats in this town who support Frederico. Indeed, if Fred ran in South Orange he'd probably with a seat there too. 3) Kathy beat Vic in a primary. Presumably the Democrats in town take a different view of her than you do.

Dave: Most of the voters in Maplewood are intelligent enough to look to elect the best person rather than simply voting the party line. Fred's winning as a Democrat rather than as an Independent had more to do with the policies and abilities of his opposition both years than with the party he did or did not belong to at the time. |

It's really torture. And just check out the decor. Isn't that a beautiful lamp? Frederico tries to inject some dance moves to relieve the boredom...

I agree that Ch 35 is boring - even Fred's dance moves (that's not the Crip walk I hope) fail to enliven it. Dave - the whole star-bellied Democrats game is pretty old. Kathy won fair and square. Kathy never switched parties, she changed her mind. I never thought you were one to join the "waffling" group. If anyone has a bone to pick to Kathy they should attack her actions and votes, not her friends. Open minds mean that people aren't think-alike, vote-alike, talk-alike. I supported Fred, Kathy, Ken and Ian because they have open minds and welcome discussion. They haven't disappointed me yet -- and I disagree with them as often as I agree.

Kathy won fairly, but she also ran against her former running mate. My initial point was to address your broadside of Vic as "doing anything" to get elected. As someone else has pointed out,
quote:Lydia, Keep in mind that Deluca lives on Lexington Ave (last I heard). Although I did not vote for him, one has to believe that he has the best interests in mind when it involves the redevelopment of SA.
and I think everyone values discussion. |

She NEVER ran against her former running mate. Khadijah was her running mate. Want to try again or save your remaining money for the Daily Double? |

"I agree that Ch 35 is boring - even Fred's dance moves (that's not the Crip walk I hope) fail to enliven it." OK, I'm chortling. If he moved north Profeta could run in SO and I'd vote for him, given his record thus far. (We have non-partisan elections so the whole party-switching thing wouldn't much matter.)
