Although he has done more than Law & Order - I looked forward to his wiseass remarks on that show. He really played that character well. Sorry to see him go... http://www.cnn.com/2004/SHOWBIZ/TV/12/29/obit.orbach/index.html |

Very sad. I understand he also acted and sang on Broadway. He was only 69. |

Orignal cast member of the Fantasticks. Yes a wonderful song & dance man. A huge resume decades before Law & Order.. a real stage veteran. Lights will dim on B'way tonight in his honor. That doesn't happen to everyone. |

He did sing on broadway. When I was in high school I had the pleasure of seeing him in 42nd Street. I was already a bit familiar with him, through my parents' interest in Murder She Wrote, on which he had a recurring role. We had something like 3rd row seats. I had never seen a show that close before. While I enjoyed the show very much, I was terribly distracted by the fact the I could SEE Jerry Orbach spitting when he spoke and sang. I went home and told my father and from then on we very lovingly referred to him as "the Spitter". My dad passed away a few years back, and I was very sorry to call my mom today to inform her that "the Spitter" had passed away.... very sad for me on so many levels. [sidebar: I have never sat that close to the stage since!] |

The spitting means he followed his voice coach's lessons, which included putting adequate air flow behind his consonants so the whole house could hear them. Celebrate the spitting. |

Tom - I fully appreciated and understood WHY he was spitting, I just never sat so close to witness it! we meant it with all due respect. |

I liked him because he could deliver those sarcastic lines with such panache. |

I'll remember him best as Baby's dad in Dirty Dancing. He was a terrific actor as well as a great Broadway musical star. |

42nd Street [Original, Musical, Comedy] Performer: Jerry Orbach Aug 25, 1980 - Jan 8, 1989 Chicago [Original, Musical, Comedy] Performer: Jerry Orbach Jun 3, 1975 - Aug 27, 1977 6 Rms Riv Vu [Original, Play, Comedy] Performer: Jerry Orbach Oct 17, 1972 - May 19, 1973 Promises, Promises [Original, Musical, Comedy] Performer: Jerry Orbach Dec 1, 1968 - Jan 1, 1972 The Natural Look [Original, Play, Comedy] Performer: Jerry Orbach Mar 11, 1967 - Mar 11, 1967 Annie Get Your Gun [Revival, Musical, Comedy] Performer: Jerry Orbach Sep 21, 1966 - Nov 26, 1966 Guys and Dolls [Revival, Musical, Comedy] Performer: Jerry Orbach Apr 28, 1965 - May 9, 1965 Carnival! [Original, Musical, Puppets] Performer: Jerry Orbach Apr 13, 1961 - Jan 5, 1963 Not to mention being the first to publicly sing..Try To Remember. And he could tap and would have made a great Sweeney Todd. Lets not forget Dirty Dancing, Crimes and Misdemeanors, Last Exit to Brooklyn, Someone to Watch Over Me, Brewsters Millions, Prince of the City and tons of guest spots on things like Murder She wrote, and Perry Mason. He will forever be Detective Lenny Briscoe. I saw him in 42nd Street as well and schlocky as that show was/is...he stole it. Completely. And though not nominated for his part the show did well at the tonys that year winning Best Musical and Best Choreography for Gower Champion. What a total bummer |

I went to school with his son (intermediate school, or middle school to suburbanites). I met him a couple of times. He was a huge man. Lost touch long ago but was thinking of him yesterday. The one think Duncan left out is I think he won a Tony for Promises, Promises. |

Hank - In addition to mob movies, I also expect SI men to be well-versed in "Back to School" with Rodney Dangerfield!

Yup in 1969 he won for Promises Promises. His only win. IT was a good year at the Tonys that year as Jerry won for the above named. James Earl Jones won for Great White Hope, Al Pacino won for Does a Tiger wear a Necktie, Julie Harris won for Forty Carats and Angela Landsbury won for Dear World.

He also had ties to the area I grew up in (Wilkes-Barre, PA) and his relatives were coal miners just like mine. |
