Hey all, I know there is a thread about the tsunami already on MOL, but I thought this headline might get more people to look at what we need to do now.... What do you think Maplewood can do to help? I know they need money, food, medicine, and water purification systems, but that's all very broad. Do you think Maplewood can start a drive? We have all these organizations, like Alliance, Rotary, etc. We're really good at rallying people. In addition, I know the Red Cross is taking donations and websites like this one: http://www.msnbc.com/modules/interactive.asp?id=/d/ip/tsunami_aid_04/data.js&nav id=6758618&cp1=1 tell you where to go. I heard a news story about a Buddhist temple down in Princeton collecting shiploads of stuff to go... I'm not sure how we go about all of this, but I'm sure we can organize something! |

I've heard that logistically it's more efficient to send money than goods. Details: http://www.redcross.org/donate/goods/ "Collections of items require valuable and scarce resources such as time, money, and personnel to sort, clean, and distribute them, which come at the expense of the emergency activities relief workers are attempting to perform. The Red Cross has neither the resources, nor the logistical set-up, to properly handle these types of donations, and therefore cannot accept them." |

After what the Red Cross pulled on us after 9/11, I wouldn't give them a red nickel. |

I saw a piece on Headline News last night about AmeriCares and their efforts to help. It seems like a very worthwhile charity. |

Sobering facts about the event and similar events(as if you needed any): If the final toll of the event is 150,000 and the population of the world is about 6.4 billion, then we will have lost roughly one 42,667th of humanity in this tragedy. According to NASA, as a result of this event, Earth's rotation has been infinitessimally altered. A day is now 3 microseconds shorter, and the planet has been tilted an inch on its axis. Article here. The tsunami in this event was roughly 30 feet high. According to author Dennis Smith, in 1958 there was an earthquake in Lituya Bay, Alaska, that "caused a landslide into the ocean that created a tsunami 1,720 feet high, a wave that could have swept over the Empire State Building." He notes that scientists recently found vertical fault lines through a volcano in the Canary Islands. "The volcano has a crater about five miles wide and a half-mile high, and erupts about every 200 years. The last eruption was in 1948, but the newly discovered fault lines have convinced some scientists that eventually the huge crater will break apart and slide into the ocean, bringing more than a half-trillion tons of rock with it. Since tsunamis are created in proportion to the amount of land that has fallen into the water, this event would likely create a wave mass never before known to written history, many times bigger than the wave at Lituya Bay. The wave would diminish a little as it crossed the Atlantic, but it could be higher than the skyscrapers of Boston, New York, Washington and Miami. Scientists do not know if it will take one, four, or 10 eruptions to separate the landmass, only that the separation is inevitable." Full article here. I hear Wyoming is nice. |

Mrmaplewood is probably referring to this: http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news/rc_blinks.html or maybe this http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2002/07/30/eveningnews/main516886.shtml However, I wouldn't feel badly about giving to the Red Cross. Your donation is very much needed. |

Hi All, I'm very familiar with this aid group, my college room mate served as it's director for several years. All money goes to aid victims, NO money goes to overhead which is paid by the Methodist Church. Best Regards, Ron Carter South Asia Emergency South Asia Earthquake and Tidal Waves December 27, 2004 The United Methodist Committee on Relief is responding through its ecumenical partners to the catastrophe in South Asia. Thousands of people are still missing and tens of thousands of people have been displaced. The full extent of the disaster is still not known in more remote areas in Sri Lanka, India and Indonesia, where ecumenical parters are responding. Please give to Advance #274305 and designate "South Asia Emergency" on the memo line of your check. Give through your local United Methodist church or mail contributions to: UMCOR, 475 Riverside Dr., Room 330, New York, NY 10115. Call 1-800-554-8583 to make a credit card donation. } One hundred percent of your gift goes to relief and recovery efforts. I was just watching the news. They say their recommendations for donating are to write a check or money order, to avoid on-the-spot donation pressure, and make sure the place you're donating to is experienced with international affairs. Then they were saying something about people answering calls on the upper west side, and that the money goes somewhere, then to Washington, then somewhere else... I tuned it out. Why can't it go DIRECTLY there?! |

Please read this article before making any donations. Cash - not goods - are needed. The link to Charitywatch (The American Institute of Philanthropy) - which monitors charities and grades them according to how wisely they spend *your* donations - has this to say about how best to help the tsunami victims - please read to the bottom of the page: http://www.charitywatch.org/hottopics/tsunami_asia.html It's already been widely reported on the radio that clothes are not really wanted....don't forget that we Westerners are far larger in stature than the petite Asians so I doubt that most donations of underwear will be small enough(Asian women typically range from size 0 to size 4, with Asian males with a max waist size of approx 28" - 30"...before they've lost weight due to lack of food. How and where is the Women's Club going to donate/distribute the donated items? Really, the only way to best give help is to donated cash (and not to a fly-by-night charity). |

I donated at work today and my company matched my donation. That's something people might want to check out before contributing on their own. Some companies have matching gift policies, but may not advertise them. You have to call HR. |

My company sent out an email to all employees today to remind us that our policy is a $2 match for every one donated. In addition, I saw today that Citibank is donating $3 million. And Sandra Bullock donated $1 million. |

nan, I should have taken your advice. I donated on my own last week, and learned today that my company is going to match our contributions. Oh well, I guess I'll just donate again... |
