musst, I saw that article too, but it didn't prove to our skeptical friends about the UN's presence. Good article, though. I'm glad techies are helping out. |

tjohn: Ewwwwww!!!! Where did I say anything about the Devil, Antichrists, etc? Sorry, Bush could be my neighbor as much as he'd like, but I just don't have a lot of faith in him as a great President. There's a difference between being a good guy and being a good leader. Doesn't mean I'm not a patriot. tjohn: Remember John Ashcroft? You seem to have a lot in common with him!!!

Oh, the irony. Utapao, the air base built by the Great Satan in the 60's is now the hub for relief efforts in the region. C-130s, the workhorse of the Great Satan, are ferrying supplies throughout the region. Give it a break Tulip. We are not evil. I'm into self-loathing as much as the next person, but give it a break. Tell you what. If a #9 quake hit on the San Andreas fault, a week later, our unrestrained domestic relief efforts would be looking pretty feeble relative to the magnitude of the disaster. |

Excellent. The frothing left thinks I have something in common with Ashcroft and the frothing right thinks I should sit on the Berkeley City Council. By triangulation, that puts me about in the middle of the political spectrum (left center, actually). Thank you for playing Tulip. |

Tulip, you got a buck you could send the Ross brothers to help pay for all the wild gyrations you post out here? Just a buck. Enough to get that "supporter" under your name. Or don't you find this board a worth while site? |

Sbenois, Since a bunch of us agitated that we'd rather tip Dave and Jamie than the mailman and the paper deliverer, they set up a paypal "jar". There is a thread on soapbox with the details (last posting yesterday, I think). Tulip, no clue what they make from advertising, but this was clearly done at user request. And no, I don't feel that I should pay you for entertainment! (not even a little) |

Thanks. I just noticed the thread. As far as I know, Dave and Jamie aren't raking in big bucks from this enterprise. And I know that they've always been hesitant to try and make a buck by instituting a fee structure. They sort of do this things because they're very much loonies and they're pretty damn dedicated to the community. So I think this is a great idea. What are most people giving?

Can we please consider tulip's participation in a thread as a corollary to Godwin's Law and consider any thread she joins to be dead? Rational discussion seems to end pretty quickly, just as if someone called someone a Nazi. No, I'm not calling you a Nazi, nor am I saying you called anyone a Nazi |

She many times starts off strong, but then flames in a swirling, eddy-like fashion when challenged. Emotions get the best of her. Don't give up on a thread simply because she posts, though. |

I think I did brilliantly on this thread. I was challenged, even personally, and I blew the opposition to smithereens. And my son got home safely, so a great time was had by all...and I don't hate my country, by cracky, I hate being told that I do... and final irony...I started the thread, so Rastro, your corollary is wrong... |

and you can't call Godwin's Law when someone is starting to prove their point, just to save your ally's face, when they are about to (ahem!!) be proven wrong. |

Yikes. Can't you red state types find a red state to nestle in? You can't stand being wrong, or uninformed, and anyone who points out to you that you are, is silly and boring. I can't stand to see you all carrying on like kids with a new toy, over Bush, when a lot of your information is faulty. How do you plan to get through life like that?

Yup, now the thread IS officially DEAD. Well, thanks again to the United Nations, showing it means business. Too bad, red state types, your policies are going down the tubes, and the Inauguration hasn't even happened yet. |

Tulip, The U.N. has serious problems as per a rational report on NPR, among others. To sing blind praise of the U.N. is to be as destructive as those who call for its abolishment. |

Same for Bush. Overtaxed must be really red-faced these days, given the paltry, immoral fifteen million that was the first pledge, and Bush's dehibernation realization, that more would be politically adviseable! ..As someone just observed, Bush was mighty quick to feel the pain of folks in Florida, so why so delayed here?

<off-topic-mild-rant> tulip, no one here is my "ally." There are many on both sides of the political fence that are arguing against your comments. You seem to lump anyone that disagrees with you on a poliical issue together. tjohn is far from a right wing nut. Same for Duncan and a bunch of others. Me? I'm not right wing (can't speak for the "nut" part), just trying to be rational. As for invoking Godwin's Law, I didn't. All I did was propose a corollary. Too frequently, the debates you (like Straw) participate in degenerate into threads about you (or Straw) rather than the topic at hand. And as for you poving anyone wrong, I haven't seen that... </off-topic-mild-rant> now back to your regularly schedule food fight) |

This one's for you Tulip...... Kofi is working hard to keep the UN at the center of things. Kofi sees the tsunami tragedy in Asia is as a way to bolster and enhance the world wide image of the UN, especially after it tucked-tail and ran from Iraq, and also from the Oil-for-Food scandal. What better way to enhance that image then to have all the disaster aid for the tsunami-affected areas channeled through UN agencies. Nice going Kofi, but too many of us remember the Oil-for-Food scandal. Until Annan has cooperated fully in the investigation of that scandal, why put them in charge of new money. But what else about Kofi Annan? Does he realize the double standard? Do you? Here is an excerpt from Kofi's press conference late last week: Q: Mr. Secretary, picking up on Richard's question, I think a lot of people are asking exactly why you waited three days on vacation in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, before you decided to fly back to New York in the face of this extraordinary crisis. Could you give us a full explanation of your thinking on that? Secondly, what kind of signal does that 72-hour delay send to the nations to which you are now appealing for greater help? SG: First of all, there was action. It wasn't inaction. We live in a world where you can operate from wherever you are. You know the world we live in now. You don't have to be physically here to be dealing with the leaders and the Governments I have been dealing with. You don't have to be physically here to be discussing with some of the agencies that we have done. I came back here because we have reached a level that I wanted to have meetings with all the people that I have met with today. So, we have taken action. And I don't have to be sitting in my office to take action. I think the same goes for you in your profession. Funny ... I don't remember reading anything in the media about Kofi continuing with his ski vacation for three days after the waves hit. Kofi-bashing just isn't in vogue right now, though it certainly should be. This "We live in a world where you can operate from wherever you are" bit works for Kofi. The press gives him the pass. Not so for Bush. Now why do you suppose that is?

Just read the NY Times article about the "secret meeting" at Holbrooke's pad to save Kofi and the UN. Oil for Food scandals, sex-harassment scandals with no punishment, prostitution rings run by blue helmets in Congo, and general unease about the UN's ability to handle the latest crisis (while not mentioning UN "leadership" on the Sudan). Was Tulip at that meeting? Don't they know how wonderful that world body is? |
