Does anyone know if Maplewood/S Orange has ever been mentioned in Weird NJ. I got my first copy today and wondered if we were weird enough.

Jimmy's Hot Dog Stand is now among the epicurean delights of South Main Street in my beloved Phillipsburg. I haven't tried it yet, but have heard it is really great, even if listed here among "weird NJ."

There was a mention of a small park in South Orange on Valley Street. There is a plaque in the middle listing the names of those that were buried there before it became a park. It has the word "Baby" on it, according to the story. It was in an issue about two years ago.

There is also mention of the unusual architecture of the corner building on South Orange Avenue and Village Plaza. It says something about how the building looks like it was built around a house, and when I checked it out it really does look like that! You can see the roof and eves of the top of a house in the middle of the brick building if you are standing on SO Ave, looking up at the roof.

Weird NJ:
1. People who don't use their turn signals.
2. Most street signs.
3. Cars parked (seemingly) in the middle of streets with one small lane in each direction. Often a foot or more from the curb.
4. Houses with no address numbers.
5. Repulsive SUVs (I guess that's redundant) that fly through crosswalks (on Prospect, for example) while children are waiting to cross.
6. The guy who was blabbering on his cell phone while checking out at Kings last week. The clerk was waiting patiently for payment while he continued his shrieking (cutting a big deal, no doubt!). I was behind him; when I spoke up, he replied "I'm on the phone, OK?" NO...NOT OK. You are not the center of the world. Finish your purchase, folks are waiting for you. Go outside and make your power calls -- maybe you can impress people out there.

ligeti - $10 says that was Straw and if you'd grabbed the phone and put it up to your ear, you'd have heard "At the tone, the time will be...."
