I'm with Papayagirl. I don't get it. Seems trying too hard to be funny to me.

Rushmore, though the soundtrack CDs from both are incredible.

"I saved Latin. What did YOU do?"

Despite that, my vote is for Royal Tennenbaums.

"I don't understand. Did you pack your bags before or after you got locked out?"

RUSHMORE (below from Murray's speech):

For some of you, it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you. Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs, and take them down. Just remember; they can buy anything, but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it.

Glenn - a friend of mine lists Bottle Rocket in his Top 5 Best Movies of all time.
I really liked both Rushmore and Royal Tennenbaums and look forward to Life Aquatic...but I just didn't enjoy Bottle Rocket. Maybe I'll have to give it another try...

Rushmore.

I don't get the Bottle Rocket thing either, but clearly Glenn & I share another favorite movie (thought I prefer O, Brother).

Margot: You probably don't even know my middle name.

Royal: (Pause) It's a trick question. You don't have one.

Margot: Helen.

Royal: (Surprised) That was my Mother's name.

Go and rent Harold & Maude and you will see how much Wes Anderson was influenced by this movie. There is even an extreme wide shot of a landscape with a giant tree that is swiped (or perhaps it is an homage?) directly from Harold & Maude and if memory serves, Rushmore also had the Cat Stevens thing going on as well. The impact the movie made on him also may explain why he chose to cast Bud Cort in The Life Aquatic.
