Hi, We are stringly considering going to Taos for the winter break (week of Feb 21). We have been going to Colorado and Utah for years, but I have always wanted to try Taos. Could anyone recommend any lodging in or near Taos? From what I understand, the town of Taos is about 25 miles away from the ski area, so I am wavering between staying near the slopes or near the town (where there is activity at night). Also, what were your general impressions of Taos as a ski area as opposed to some of the larger ski areas in Colorado and Utah? Thanks, Marc @ millburnweb.com

I have skiied in Colorado and Utah also, but liked Taos the best. We had slopeside condos but can't remember the name. The kids were teens then and at night were able to take the shuttle bus into Taos for some of their own fun. By far, Taos is my favorite place to ski, lots of fun shops and things to do right on the mountain. Taos itself is kind of an artsy community like Lambertville. I would not stay in town because often the weather is great in town and there is a regular ski lovers snowstorm on the mountain, an uphill, winding drive all the way. The night we drove in there was no snow until we hit the mountain, we were saying our prayers all the way up, could not see two feet in front of us. |

You do know that the school break is no longer the "week of", but rather the "long weekend surrounding", right? (2/17-22) edited to add - or are you not in M/SO? In that case, I retract the comment. (Are other school districts still taking a week then?) |

Yes, I am from Millburn ... but there are also a lot of M/SO people on MillburnWeb. Our school break is the entire week of Feb 21. |

taos is a great place. especially if you like to ski steeps. if you can spend the $ it is definitely worth it to stay on mountain. the thunderbird is a great lodge. There are others as well. |

I have skiied Colorado (Aspen, Vail, Copper, Keystone, Winter Park) and Taos, and loved them all. Taos is a more challenging mountain overall, when it has good snow--and I think there have been a lot of southern tracking storms this year. Even the beginner slopes have good vertical drops. I agree that you should stay slopeside, but you also have to spend a lot of time in the town. It can be a bit touristy and kitschy, but lots of fun. And it is great to take a day off and drive to Sante Fe--if you like modern and southwestern art it is hard to beat an afternoon walking up Canyon Road and checking out the galleries. |

We've just got back from skiing in Killington, Vermont but stayed 15 miles away in Rutland. No-one in our family likes getting up early so we would have appreciated being closer so we could have had more time to sleep in LOL! (We made a late decision to go so all other accommodation closer to the slopes were fully booked). Last Christmas (2003)we went to Whistler, British Columbia and stayed in the village with a short walk to the chair-lifts and gondolas - it was ideal. My husband and son are going off to ski and snowboard at Snowmass (Aspen) in the February break and they're staying here: http://www.silvertreehotel.com No messing about with trying to find parking spaces, lockers for walking shoes/boots etc. |
