"as good as the Yugos "he" imported?" I'm very curious, Who is he? And Liberal Dems, here is an example for you to munch on. Since we eat a lot of cheese in my household, this year I plan on making it my business to purchase only American cheese this year. See how easy that was? Now you can all play silly games, but I feel that this issue is important. What's alarming, but actually funny? The trade defict seems to be so very important to most registered Democrats, but when presented with an opportunity to help offset it they feel it isn't a priority for themselves. Ha! What's that tell you? Tells me that there are a lot of hypocrits. |

Maybe there are a lot of hypocrites out there, but for myself I think a "buy American" effort is to some degree simplistic. For example, I make an effort to support Maplewood businesses. But what if the merchandise on the shelf is made in China? Should I go to Wal-Mart and buy an American made equivalent? I also, if possible, prefer to support goods made in union shops. All things being equal, I'll buy American, but I've got other prinicples that I consider as well. But you may be happy to know that my most recent major purchase for myself was a U.S. made Gibson guitar. |

Buying American can be compared to going on a diet (90% of which fail). Instead of aiming for 100% American-made products, pick one or two that you can handle. Forinstance - coffee, Whole Foods has shade-grown union-friendly brands, so for an extra $2.00 a pound the switch is pretty easy. Whole Foods carries a lot of local growers for their produce -- so resist the raspberries in January and enjoy local organic preserves. Next year you add a little more. There are some great NJ cheese makers - I wish I could remember the farm I love, they give tours and the cheese is so yummy, sometimes it's not 60 days so that makes it "illegal" , but it's so good it's worth it. All organic and grass fed, and they are so rich 2 chunks is a meal. The concept of changing your habits 180 degrees in one day or month is destined for failure - tweak it here and there and habits will change. |

When you shop at Wal-Mart, who do you think makes more money selling products made in Indonesia: Indonesians or American shareholders? Hint: it ain't the Indonesians. Speaking of whom, I think I may go out of my way these days to buy goods made in India, Indonesia, Thailand, and Sri Lanka. |

ML wrote: "Should I go to Wal-Mart and buy an American made equivalent?" Good luck with that. Wal-Mart's policy with its suppliers (simplistically stated) is, "I want it for less next year." Their corporate goals practically force their suppliers to shift to non-U.S. (especially China) production. Face: For your "Liberal Dem" challenge, do I have to buy "American cheese", as in Kraft Pasteurized Processed Cheese Food Product, or may I continue to seek out and purchase an American-made Stilton, Ementhal, Gruyere, Jarlsburg, Lipta, Lancashire, Stilton, Double Gloucester, Cheshire, Dorset Bluveny, Brie, Roquefort, Pol le Veq, Port Salut, Savoy Aire, Saint Paulin, Carrier de lest, Bres Bleu, Bruson, Camenbert, Gouda, Edam, Case Ness, Smoked Austrian, Sage Darby, Wensleydale, Feta, Gorgonzola, Parmesan, Mozzarella, or Cheddar? http://www.minderella.com/words/cheeseshop.htm |

nohero, I thought Wal-Mart promoted "Made In America" products in their stores. I guess I was mistaken, but that could be because I avoid their stores like some people avoid French wine or liberal guitar players from NJ. |

A gun shot. For a guy who is supposed to be the commisioner of his sport, he doesn't seem to care that he's destroying it. |

Face - if you read Dave's link about Chinese cars, you'll see the chief figure in importing Chinese cars to the US is the same entrepreneur who brought Yugo to the US. BTW - I have heard many 'liberal dems' complain about the budget deficit (and it falls on deaf ears), but I haven't heard the same attention paid to the trade deficit. |

It's going to be close to impossible to buy American this year. As per WTO rules quotas disappeared on January 1 of this year. While you can expect some safeguard measures against China (and China is actually imposing export tariffs to try to control some categories) you will see even more imports from China especially but Asia in general and expect to see even more manufacturing migrate east. |

Actually the Bush deficit should help the trade deficit. As the dollar weakens globally our goods get cheaper to buy overseas and our Ralph Lauren Polo shirts coming out of Building 15 in Dongguan, China go to $1.99 (down from $2.29) a piece before they hit Bloomingdale's at $75. The only possible problem left is that no one wants American goods because of a perception that we're a bunch of warmongers. |

Except for the fact that as the dollar craps out, foreign investors - who are also servicing large meatball sized chunks of our budget deficit, start to get upset than they're getting crushed on the FX. And they pull out. And we raise interest rates to keep them happy. And while seniors get happy because they get COLA adjustments, most homeowners and car buyers and credit card borrowers get VERY unhappy as rates rise...
