A couple of weeks ago (pre-Tsunami), I received this proposal in an email from a wealthy (& maybe a little guilt-ridden) relative. My initial response was "stupid idea", but since then I've been mulling it over. I'm still not decided. What do you guys think? -s. "Not One Damn Dime Day Inauguration Day, Thursday, January 20th, 2005 is "Not One Damn Dime Day" in America. On "Not One Damn Dime Day" those who oppose what is happening in our name in Iraq can speak up with a 24-hour national boycott of all forms of consumer spending. During "Not One Damn Dime Day" please don't spend money. Not one damn dime for gasoline. Not one damn dime for necessities or for impulse purchases. Not one damn dime for anything for 24 hours. The object is simple: remind the people in power that the war in Iraq is immoral and illegal; that they are responsible for starting it and that it is their responsibility to stop it. "Not One Damn Dime Day" is to remind them, too, that they work for the people of the United States of America, not for the international corporations and K Street lobbyists who represent the corporations and funnel cash into American politics. There's no rally to attend. No marching to do. No left or right wing agenda to rant about. On "Not One Damn Dime Day" you take action by doing nothing. You open your mouth by keeping your wallet closed. For 24 hours, nothing gets spent, not one damn dime, to remind our religious leaders and our politicians of their moral responsibility to end the war in Iraq and give America back to the people."

Imagine if you were a small business owner and had no business for a day. |

Soda< I think this would have been reasonable 1 year ago, to show everyone’s frustration, but we JUST had an election. The people (All of whom do not live in NJ) have voiced their opinions. Not that I’m saying that they’re right but that is what elections are for.

My mother sent me that one. I told her that it would mostly hurt small business owners and was a terrible way to try to express your frustration with an Administration that doesn't give a rat's about small business owners anyway. |

It won't hurt anyone at all if you just go out and buy the stuff you wanted to buy that day on the day before or the day after, which is what most people participating in this will end up doing anyway.

But you never quite spend the same amount. There are things that are impulse purchases, food, etc. that you won't buy two of the next day. |

That's a good point, I'm not going to buy two bagels from the bagel guy outside my building the next day.

And how is depriving your bagel guy of his livelihood going to stick it to the Bush Administration? |

You're forgetting that the guy stiffing the bagel operator may not effect Bush, but the guy will feel better. That has to count for something, and many times that feeling is all that's required. |

Ummm first I was pointing out the futility of the whole proposal and then I was pointing out the futility of depriving the bagel guy his dollar for that day, folks...
