OK, so we didn't get our 2005 parking permit last week. And we decided to switch which car my husband will drive to the train this year, so he drove the car that has no old parking decals on it this morning. I stopped by the car to pick up the registration on my way to get a new parking permit and there's already a ticket for violating the non-permit parking rule. Now, I hardly saw any cars with new stickers, and our car was the only one I with a ticket. Obviously a grace period is in effect if you have a car with old parking permit decals. I'm kicking myself for not getting the permit last week, but I'm still irritated that we got a ticket. My frustration is deepened by the fact that the Municipal Office isn't even open today to get a new permit, and the violation bureau isn't answering calls. Hey, but at least parking enforcement is working today. I may try to argue the ticket but its only $30. I might get me out of paying it because the wrong date was entered on the ticket - 1/3/04 instead of 1/3/05. Does anybody know what the grace period is etc? Why don't they do renewals through the mail? That would make it so much easier. |

I don't think there is an official grace period. However the police usually don't start handing out tickets for cars with the prior year permit until the middle of January. However they view a car without any permit fair game. |

you should have parked in a spot in town -- 2 or 3 hour spot. Those tickets are either $15 or $20. If you park with no permit in a permit only spot you will definitely get a ticket. Less likely to get on ein a regular spot. |

One of our relatives kept his car in front of our house for the Christmas holiday and his car still got a ticket. I've been trying all day to get someone from town hall and the violations bureau and no answer either. Wouldn't it be nice if their phone messages said something about being closed?!! And why is the 2nd day after New Years a holiday??? Sometimes government makes me want to puke. I wish they were held to the same standards as most private sector companies. |

There does seem to be an unofficial grace period if you have the prior year sticker. I would not expect them to do the same for cars with no sticker. You can get the sticker by mail. I picked up an application at the train station and mailed it in last week with my check and a copy of my license and registration. I assume I'll get the sticker this week. It is odd that the town offices are closed today. This does remind me of another annoying thing that I keep meaning to do something about. There are a couple of 20 minute spots on Dunnell in front of the civic house. Those of us with kids in the after school program need them to pick up our kids. But there is one person who, almost everyday, parks all day in one of those spots. At some point I'm going to write to the PD and ask them to start enforcing the 20 min regulation, though I may be nice and put a warning note on the offending car first. |

When my stickered car goes into the repair shop and I park an unstickered car, I post a note listing the permit and license numbers. I've done this a half-dozen times and have never had a ticket. I suggest you post a note saying that this is a new car and you are waiting to receive the new sticker. (It wouldn't hurt to list your old license and permit numbers either.) |

I picked up my new sticker at the municipal bldg yesterday, and they said the grace period was "about 3 weeks." (We didn't discuss whether or not this required you to have an old sticker already.) Although i wonder if it'll need to be longer than that. Last year, the forms were given out on the jitneys in early december, and i just saw the jitneys handing out this year's forms today. And i actually asked for the form at the concierge desk several times over the past few weeks. First, Pen (or Jen?) gave me one, but when i went to fill it out, i realized it was from 2003. A few days later, i asked the other woman who mans the concierge desk on P&J's night off if i should use the 03 form, and she very sternly told me NO, and she doesn't have any 04 forms yet. |

We've had the new forms, all three of them, in the Maplewood Library the whole month of December. I think they came in the very first of the month. When I meet new people in town I always encourage them to stop and look at the local area bulletin board/counter we(the library staff) keep stocked with local forms/info. Being part of the Maplewood govt. system, we get these things quicker and with more reliability than other places do. R |

I stopped by the municipal hall last night to fill out the form for a new parking permit. They said that it will be mailed to us, but that the 2004 decals will be honored through January. I wouldn't put your permit application in the mail or leave it with the concierge, though. We did that in September when we got a new car. Three weeks later the town clerk still claimed to have never received it, but they gave us a new decal anyway (we were trading the old one in). A month or so after that the town clerk called to say that they had located our old decal and request for a new one. |

Reflective - No, no bumper stickers! Resolution - I called the violations bureau to figure out when the court date is scheduled (couldn't read it on the ticket). The lady there seemed surprised that I was going to come in to fight a parking ticket. I explained the situation, gave her my new permit # (obtained on Tuesday) and she put it in for a dismissal since the municipal building was closed on Monday. She did say there was NOT a grace period for anybody, but I wasn't going to argue that since she was so amenable to helping me out. So a happy ending to my story. |

A Municipal employee explained to me why government offices were closed on January 3rd. New Year's Day was on a Saturday. They couldn't take Friday as the holiday because Friday was in 2004! From a payroll-bookeeping angle you can't have a paid holiday in 2004 for a 2005 holiday. I also found that many private companies were closed on the 3rd. |
