Does anyone else's company extend discounts to their employees for certain products/services? Here are a few from my company...there is no reason why anyone can't benefit from the discounts. I'm a contractor at a large company. In other words, I act like a regular employee, but they view me as a supply, not a human. There's an employee matching program for contributions for Tsunami relief. I asked, and no, I don't qualify, since I'm not an employee. Harrumph. |

Tom, maybe you could give the $$ to an employee to donate, and then it would be matched. |

Ril: That could present a problem for Tom if he wanted a receipt to submit with his taxes. Even if he didn't care about the tax deduction, it wouldn't be fair to the corporation. Still it is a shame that those of us who don't work for corporations which will be matching funds (government workers and employees of small businesses for example) will not be able to get as much for our buck as certain corporation employees will. |

The corporation for which I am a contractor (and former employee) has a similar policy. In their defense (not that they really need any help from me), I suspect that it is just part of the overall set of policies in place to distinguish employees from contractors and avoid having to offer them employment or retirement or other benefits of employee status as a result. |

Sac. I think you are right. Mainly its about not having to deal with Health insurance. Witness the UPS strike a few years back. |

Tom, I was in that situation for years. At one point I worked in a department staffed only with "supplies." When we hired someone new, she had to order her chair in installments--one month the arms, the next the base, then the seat... not enough money in the supply budget. |

To answer Cubeless's original question, we occassionally get discounts to various shows and sporting events but you have to present your employee ID card when ordering so I doubt others could take advantage of these offers. |

Just as an aside does anyone see an ethical problem with providing discounts that were intended for employees to the general public? Cubeless lest you be worried because it appears we work for the same company I'm just asking the question. |

Sportsnut: If the discount is driven by a desire on the part of the company supplying the goods or services to stimulate interest in their product, clear surplus or slightly outdated equipment,or fill seats at a production which might otherwise go unused, then I see no ethiclal problem. Such offers would likely be extended to a wider population if the company in question had a reliable means of reaching them. If we are talking about an offer which is being paid for by the corporation, matching donation funds, or contributing funds to goods or services intended as an employee incentive for example, then I would agree that it is unethical for non-employees to gain by taking advantage of such offers. |

Sportsnut- I'm part of the marketing organization. You? I don't see any ethical problem with sharing. One of the companies offering a discount, 1800flowers, has printed fliers (with the discount code) that have been given out quite freely. Furthermore it leads to increased revenue for their company and also gives our company more volume with them which contributes to our balance of trade. Most of our other discounts...the better ones like Apple, Target, etc. have extranet sites set up just for our corporate employees to use.

Will those discount codes have to change to SBC1? |
