How about the "Xanadu" soundtrack? And for that matter, the movie? Count me as an Abba fan. I almost made my husband take me to see Mamma Mia until I realized it would probably be the worst day of his life. |

I have so many guilty pleasures that sometimes I feel like I shouldn't even be living in this often elitist place. (For the record, I have 2 bachelor's degrees and a master's.) To mention a few, I love the new Star Magazine with all its glossy photos of "stars w/out makeup" which helps to pass the time standing in line at Shop Rite. I have seen WWE matches in person and am considering going to see NASCAR this year. I also watch America's Funniest Home Videos and Cops. I also love Little House on the Prairie and the Waltons. And I own many really "awful" CD's including a couple of Celine's, Britney Spears, Air Supply, ABBA, Leo Sayer...and my husband and I saw Debbie Gibson perform on New Year's Eve. I love pop culture in all its forms ("high", "low", etc.) and enjoying occasionally tacky things, I also laugh at myself, which I think sometimes people have a hard time doing. I guess this means I should be packing my bags and leaving SO this week, right? BTW, maybe there should be a tsunami relief concert with all the above mentioned artists. Just don't forget Slim Whitman and Boxcar Willie!

Thats Deborah Gibson Goozer, show a little respect. Actually here in the States Abba is seen as teenybopper fluff but in Europe they're revered as serious artists. Glen Campbell always picked the best Jimmy Webb songs and briefly took over Brian Wilsons slot in the Beach Boys. For these things he get's a lifetime, Get Out of Jail Free card. After a days work and an ear bleedin, stereo cranked ride home, I sometimes put on the Carpenters. OK, it's out in the open now. PS-As far as bad taste goes, anyone see how much those pictures of the dogs playing poker are fetching on E-Bay these days ?. |

uke, I saw a doc on PBS about the Carpenters last month and I thought about how cool their songs were. Karen Carpenter had one of the greatest voices in the history of recorded music. And I forgot how good a drummer she was. |

Bets- Channel 10 is NY 55 (a Long Island station). It's a repeat of that day's NBC broadcast. We saw Abba with friends a couple years ago. TS & I didn't care one way or the other, but thought it would be fun. One of our friends loooooves ABBA, but his partner loathes them. So, the three of us had a good time, dancing & singing along with the cast (everyone in the audience was, it's encouraged). Loathe-guy pretended to pout and roll his eyes, but we caught him tapping his foot & humming. Sometimes you just gots to go with the flow. |

I'm reminded of a joke: A teenage boy dies, and wakes up in a theater with a stage all set up for a rock concert. Guitars, amps, drums, etc. He walks up onto the stage, and from the wings Jimi Hendrix, John Lennon, Janis Joplin, John Entwistle, Keith Moon and Jim Morrison walk out onto the stage and start picking up instruments, microphones, etc. The kid is ecstatic. He shouts, "Oh MAN! Jimi! John! Janis! Wow, Heaven is AWESOME!" Keith Moon turns to him and says, "You think you're in Heaven, kid?" and shakes his head. Then he turns to the band and shouts out, "OK guys, 'Close to You,' One...Two...Three...Four...."

Funny jjkatz but during Entwistles time on earth, he was a huge Carpenters fan. Also when Keith Moon first joined the Who, his favorite music was surf music like Jan and Dean. |

Absolutely. I once read an interview where he said that after a day in the studio with the Who bashing away, he used to love to go home and chill out listening to the Carpenters. I used to know a guy who played drums with him in his solo band and he confirmed it. |

Deidre, sorry if my post offended you. It was meant to offend Michael Bolton. Anyway, welcome to the cliqueless clique, where anyone can be a member. Gozer, I'm with you. I've got years of higher ed and work, and my husband can't believe I love the star (and the new Us, 1.99!). It beats History of the world anyday. Guiltiest pleasure: Country music. Starting with George Jones, and including Garth Brooks and all his friends in low places. |

Another Karen Carpenter fan here. Who knew there are so many of us? I can cry at the drop of a note when I listen to her. Her early death is one of the tragic moments in my life. So much talent. Gemini, I'm also a country music fan, although I hesitate to call it a guilty pleasure. Some of it is quite good. Gretchen Wilson is tops in my book right now. "When I Think About Cheatin'" that reflects the work of Loretta Lynn and other classic singer/songwriters. |

Well, she's already passed half of the initiation by taking a stand on you, Sbenny. All she needs to do to complete the process is one of the following: 1. Start a thread complaining about tacky Xmas decorations. 2. Respond defending the tacky Xmas decorations. 3. Complain about the wild packs of kids roaming the Village on weekend evenings. 4. Defend the kids in the Village as typical preteens, who are better off spending money in the Village than having sex/doing drugs in the park. 5. Freak out about the gang problem in the school because she heard from her neighbor's dentist's golf partner that two kids wearing red baseball caps were seen walking side by side down Elmwood. 6. Defend the right of kids to walk in pairs and wear baseball caps of any color they choose. 7. State that a dead, bug-infested tree in one of the parks should be cut down because it is a public health hazard, ready to fall on innocent citizens at any moment. 8. Form a protest group to link arms around the tree and stop the chainsaws because that tree is the home of the only remaining T-rex Falcon left in the entire northern hemisphere. 9. Rant because wild packs of off-leash wolf-dogs tried to eat a baby in a stroller being pushed thru Memorial Park. 10. Insist that packs of dogs should run free thru the park, fertilizing the lawn, and thus providing a valuable, free service to taxpayers. She has to do only one of those and she's ful-fledged in!

Welcome aboard Deidra. George Jones a guilty pleasure ?, the man is incredible. Thread drift-While in Nashville I was told that, while George Jones was married to Tammy Wynette, she used to hide the car keys from him so he couldn't take the car to the bar (sounds like a country song). One day she came home and found the cars still there and the keys still hidden but no George. She drove to his favorite saloon and found George sitting out front plastered, sitting on the rideable lawn-mower. I'm just full of useless info. |

10 minutes into it, and I already want to punch her (sorry Deidra ) She just anounced thet there is another embryo waiting for her in NY, that was made at the same time as Rene Charles, and she will take time off from Vegas to go there and try to implant it. Oprah asked if she will work during her pregnancy, she said she doesn't have to: she "did such a great job last time, and looked so great and felt so great that I need to do the same thing for this baby" Ugh. Oh Yeah - and when asked how she raises him to be a centered kid with values and empathy, despite being born to such privilege, she responded that she tries to keep him like a normal kid and even lets him dress himself for his golf games- even though his hat is sometimes crooked.

Debby, No disrespect to you but don't attack her as a MOTHER!!!...I understand you guys don't like her as a singer but lay off when it comes to her as a parent...that's just out of line. I watched the Oprah show on a later broadcast and I guess you were selectively "tuned out" when she admitted she spoils her son with "things" but her quote following that was, "It's not what you GIVE them, it's how you RAISE them." I like to think I have a good sense of humor but there is a "line" that you ALL go beyond and frankly, it's a little too cynical for my taste...and Soulful Mr T, I am one of those "only woman in history" that thought I was beautiful while carrying both of my sons...maybe not EVERYDAY, and I could name a few others. Halfway into my 2nd pregnancy I was admitted in the hospital with pain but for the most part, I ate right and kept myself together when I was able!...but then again, I am one of those women who confidently KNOW that I am beautiful anyway. Also, I know of true "miracle" births that have blessed the lives of my friends and family...stories that would bring this group to tears of joy (I think - maybe not), if you heard them. With all that said, the direction of my original post is taking a more negative turn - so let's call it "quits" on this subject...and damn, what a shame, I'm not laughing anymore. |

Wow - Deidra... Didn't mean to offend at all. I actually don't mind her as a singer - her rendition of "God Bless America" in the 9/11 concert made me teary-eyed. That being said, I really can't stand how she capitalizes on her pregnancy and birth and markets her own motherhood - she reminds me of Kathie Lee Gifford (hope I didn't just drive another nail in the coffin). No emoticons for peace-offerings here, so just imagine I've drawn an olive branch. |

Debby, I hear you and I was just responding to your harsh attack on how she feels about being a mother....now Kathie Lee Gifford is another story. She was annoying with her kids and her marriage because it was a constant everyday on and on and on and she came off a bit self-righteous too much (but that's HER issue)...I wouldn't parallel Celine with her though. This "Miracle" project with Anne Geddes was a one-time thing celebrating life and motherhood. I thought it was very timely (with all the bad things going on in the world)....and personally, I would rather see someone capitalize on the miracle of a new life than the other negative crap I'm hearing in popular music today. So, alright everyone (and all potential posters), let's end this NOW on a peaceful note...and just agree to disagree and no more attacks. LET THIS BE THE END...PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEZ! Peace to you all...and BTW, Rah! Rah! for Jamie Foxx to win best actor at the Oscars! ...that will truly bring tears of joy and pride to my eyes! Go Jamie!
