Lia,
where is a good place to get lavender oil? Can I use the water/lavender spray like Fabreeze to freshen carpets and furniture, as well as fight fungus and bacteria as it freshens? If so, let's market this - we'll discuss tonite, thanks.

Shh - you can get white beeswax at most art supply stores - Val's in the village might carry it - I'm sure places like Micheals' have it.

You can get Lavender Oil in bulk from Centflor Mfg. Co in NYC - Ask for "Gene" - it costs about $16 a pound. You want to order Lavender ESSENTIAL oil (not a fragrance oil) 40/42 - I don't know if they officially require a resale #. When you call them just sound like you know what you're ordering and they probably won't ask. They ship quickly, it should probably arrive tomorrow.

I think you'll have to order a minimum of 5 pounds - that should last you forever. Still, if you're buying those eensy ml for $10 at Whole Foods, it's a good deal.

You can learn to make soap and use up the rest of the lavender oil that way.

Hey, I'll take a pound! My daughter has long, long hair so even the THOUGHT of lice makes me...itchy. She's at Jefferson and they did check this week.

What is going on here??

A thread where no one is throwing invective at anyone else? No abusive comments? No personal attacks? No raging rants? No foaming at the mouth?

Just a lot of good information, valuable help, and good advice from concerned neighbors?

. . . I love MOL.

Now I'll need to find a book that gives recipes for lavender oil tonics...for skin, housecleaning, etc. Any suggestions?
And DebG, if I order it I'll PL you.

Ugh. As if I wasn't grossed out enough.

And the one issue that no one has mentioned is the haircutters. Does anyone pay attention to where the brushes/combs/scissors/capes have been?

My dad used to bring his own scissors, brushes, etc. to his hairdresser. He had a very neat set in a custom briefcase.

My mom used to run all of our hair brushes & combs thru the dishwasher a couple times a month.

Gee -- just because I don't have kids, I don't get the vacation, the pushing gift and now the cool oil remedies?

Seriously, if anyone orders the lavendar oil in bulk & wants to sell some off, PL me & I'll chip in.

The pushing gift?! I don't know if I actually got an official "pushing" gift, but I take advantage of it as much as I can now!
Greenie, you and Deb are on my lavender oil list! Maybe we can get Lydia to teach us all what to do with the stuff. We can hold the course in my kitchen. The soapstone countertops are perfect for all sorts of experiments!

Hairdressers are pretty good about cleaning their scissors and combs - That bottle of blue stuff (Barb-something) with the metal top is a disinfectant.

When you sit down and the barber fluffs your hair and combs it a bit here and there while it's dry and asks what you want -- they're eyeing your head for nits as well as figuring out which way your part goes - especially in walk-in places.

The licensing board for haircutters and nail salons are really strict about sanitary procedures being followed. If a place looks clean, it probably is clean.

Follow your hunch the same way you do with a restaurant. Grimy and gross bathroom = find another place or bring your own utensils

Oh! I just remembered this great mail order company, they are a good source for essential oils, fragrance oils, cool containers and raw materials for other projects that you may want to try if you have leftover oils.

I like to make hand cream and bath salts at home - you can fiddle around with the recipe and make one cream for after shaving, another for post-sun, one that's safe for babies, etc.

shh, I did an article on this a few months back and talked to many experts and the bottom line from the American Academy of Pediatrics' Committee on Infectious Disease is that the natural remedies on the market have not been proved effective or safe (can't speak for home remedies, but from my discussion with the docs I believe the consensus is "don't bother"). Their recommended treatment (which HAS been proved safe, unlike the so-called "natural" remedies) is to treat and then retreat 7 to 10 days later with a product that contains 1 percent permethrin, such as Nix. Such products are safe to use on all children. I might still have all the study literature from the AAP lying around if you'd like to see it, but I'm sure the girls are FINE. You were wise to choose the best treatment. There are other chemical treatments that have rightfully gotten a bad name, but permethrin is not one of them.

Thanks Rudbekia. I did the Rid immediately (day 1) to make sure the buggers were killed and then meticulously combed. I used the essential oils as backup and combed every night thoroughly to make sure I didn't miss anything. Day 7 I combed through again, but didn't see anything so I decided against using the Rid again.
I don't need to see the study, I think I even read about alt. treatments not working online. I hate to expose them to chemicals unless necessary, which I guess this instance was. I guess it was better than putting mayo in their hair to suffocate the lice and having to deal with that mess. I am just grateful to have been able to successfully deal with it and not recontaminate the house.

'specially since we're coming over for dinner on saturday. I'd hate to have to wear my hazmat suit.

BTW, PIppi, I didn't mention this in the past but I'm calling for sequins. All the women have to wear something sparkly.
