Yesterday My family and I were on our way to Rte 10 and while stopped at the light at the top of the hill on South Orange Ave. (just past The Top) a fine young gentleman driving a tricked out Lincoln Navigator pulled up to the light then proceeded to drive right through it while it was still red.

As we started down the mountain this fine, upstanding citizen then opened his window and threw out what appeared to be the remnants of his lunch from Burger King as he sped along down the hill. Not quite finished he then proceeded to barrel down South Orange ave at speeds in excess of 70 mph. We caught up to him again at the light where JFK parkway intersects SO Ave. He then proceeded to make a {edit} right turn on to Walnut (?) heading past the mall - again speeding along weaving in and out of traffic until he came to the three way stop. Of course he didn't stop there and rolled right on through on the heels of the car in front of him. This behavior continued until we got to the intersection of Rte 10 where he proceeded to switch lanes until he made it through the light and into the Linens and things lot.

I didn't have my cell phone on me but I did write down his plate. Is it too late to file a complaint?

Just wondering how people like this continue to get away with things like that.

Nothing you can do about it...Pricks get away with murder until they kill someone.

You sure about that Strawberry? Sports - Why don't you call the police station and see if you can file a complaint what's involved if you do?

So OR Lady,

Nothing will be done unless you have a group of witnesses AND someone was hurt.

We didn't keep up - we only caught him at the lights. Further evidence of the fact that speeding on local streets doesn't really save any time.

Reminds me of the time years ago when going down S. Orange Ave. towards Don's when a driver crossed the double yellow line into the opposite lanes (no one coming towards him thank God)to pass a couple of cars.

If I recall, you can file a complaint but it becomes your word against theirs if there are no witnesses. Hopefully this jerk will wrap himself around a telephone pole and only kill himself.

Contact the police station for any of the towns in which you witnessed a moving violation and ask them how to proceed. I am pretty sure you can file a citizen's complaint and appear at municipal court when the thing comes to trial.

Thanks, I will do that. I think that the most heinous offense was running the red light then throwing his trash out the window.

It really pisses me off. What is it about people throwing garbage out their window? My parents usually come down 24 onto 78 east bound and take the maplewood exit and they constantly ask me why there is so much trash there. What is it with these people?

I don't know why people simply cannot throw away their trash properly. It makes me so mad.

A few weeks ago I was driving through South Mountain Reservation. The person in the car ahead of me dumped a lot of garbage out of their window. It was a windy day and most of it went into the woods. I tried to get their plate number, but it was under a tinted plate holder and I couldn't read it. Ugh.

I don't get it either. It makes no sense. A few weeks ago in the city, i was just walking behind a woman who was peeling open a candy bar. She got to the end, popped up the last bit in her mouth and just tossed the wrapper onto the ground. Uh, does she really think that's OK? What if we ALL did that? Even my 3-year-old knows we'd all be wading around in each other's garbage if we did that. My 3-year-old, in her innocence, will say, "Hey, that's littering!" if she sees someone doing it.

Those tinted license plate covers are illegal. They really bug me. I would be a nasty cop, because I see violations everywhere I look.

This is what cell phones are for. If you see someone burning a red light, get their license number and call the police.

If you see someone littering, speak up. I find that simply saying, 'excuse me, I think you dropped this' and handing it to them is enough to get them deeply embarassed. Unless you are dealing with real morons, in which case they will probably just throw it back on the ground right in front of you. But at least they will give it a little thought next time.

zoesky - it drives me nuts when people litter, but especially when they litter in NYC where there is a garbage can on every corner!

not to make any of your complaints seem trivial but if you call police department and report someone running a red light you are likely to get very little response for several reasons. first is that the officers will be very unlikely to find the driver, second the officers have to see a violation to issue a summons and third during the days most of the departments around here are pretty busy to start running all over the place when someone calls in that a certain vehicle ran a red light.

if you do decide to call make sure that you call on the bussiness line and not 911. 911 is for true emergencies not minor traffic vilolations, stray dogs or noise complaints.

And since you should not use 911, I took down the numbers of the neighboring police departments, and I carry them with me. Stick this in your wallet or in your PDA or on your dashboard:

Irvingon Police 973-399-6600
Maplewood Police 973-762-3400
Millburn Police 973-564-7001
Newark Police 973-733-3000
South Orange Police 973-763-3000
Springfield Police 973-376-0400
Union Police 908-851-5000

I think there's also a code to report reckless driving. Don't remember it now, but I think it's got 7's in it. (711?)

I'm thinking Sportsnut may want to hunt down and kill this driver.
Based on this thread, I can't see how a jury would convict him.
