Dear Richard, Your decision to record a public service announcement urging Palestinians to vote in their election is just about the dumbest thing you've ever done. So far, you've gotten universally panned for this ego-driven bit of lunacy. Some great quotes I've seen from Palestinians today included this gem:
quote:One Gaza soap factory worker interviewed by Reuters, Manar an-Najar, was quoted saying: "I don't even know who the candidates are other than Abu Mazen, let alone this Gere. We don't need the Americans' intervention. We know who to elect. Not like them – they elected a moron."
http://electronicintifada.net/v2/article3481.shtml But none is this surprises me about you Richard. After all, you're the same guy who pleaded with firefighters at the 9/11 concert to channel their anger and desire for vengeance to something positive. Needless to say, Richard, you were booed off the stage - pretty quickly too. Finally, Richard, my disgust for you was actually sealed long ago when you filed for divorce from Cindy Crawford. What the hell were you thinking about? http://electronicintifada.net/v2/article3481.shtml |

Manar an-Najar for President! Anyone with sense enough to hate both Bush and Richard Gere can't be all bad. |

Why is it that any celebrity who talks about any subject outside of acting comes across as a complete moron? And why do the same celebrities seem to have a magnetic attraction to the stupidest, silliest of causes? Like 'animal rights'? Just asking. |

I would argue that any of us, given the international forum and celebrity they have would advance causes they believe in. And not every celebrity who talks out side of acting comes across as a complete moron, those are just the ones making the news. Jodie Foster, for instance, speaks on topics and is incredibly articulate. Michael Stipe did one of the best Charlie Rose shows I have ever seen. It is merely that they have the attention of the world and want to make a difference (in their mind). Not one of us on MOL who believes strongly in something would forsake such an opportunity were it presented us. IMHO. |

I agree. Who ever wrote the script, though -- or approved it (Gere) -- did not do themselves or their cause a service. Ron Silver did quite well. |
