Hardly worth mentioning, except from a curiosity standpoint... a few of my neighbors in the golf island area had a few issues last week. Minor damage to Christmas decorations (non-denominational reindeer, in case anyone is curious). Another had their Chistmas tree moved from the curb to the front porch, for some odd reason. Has this happened to anyone else recently? |

with the rampant theft of xeon headlights from vehicles across south orange, maplewood, union and other towns im actually surpised that your neighborhood has been spared and only had some decoration damage. |

Graffiti was power washed off the back walls of the Main Library today by Public Works crew. It's getting to be a monthly job |

Graffiti could be just plain vandalism or it could be a gang marking its turf.

Yes, the library is very lucrative turf. |

Turf isn't just about having a spot to use for drug deals. It's about power, and telling other gangs where they can and cannot go. |

I've made this suggestion before, and it's gotten bogged down in legal concerns, but there still ought to be a way to install camera boxes in those tunnels, whether or not there are cameras inside or if they're working at all -- it's a deterrent. We have to take more of a stand against this. It's disgusting and sad for the children who like the art. |

That would be nice if they were a deterrent. Unfortunately, though, our car was stolen from the Union County Courthouse lot that has cameras all over it. Apparently, it's too much work and poor use of time to hunt through the tape to find the creeps. |

Having grown up in Maplewood, mischief and petty vandalism were pretty much par for the course out on the weekend and even after school. We'd smoke dope under the tunnel by Maplewood Junior High and wander around seeing what we could get away with, which was pretty much everything since I was never hauled in by the police. Now as a homeowner I understand how lousy our antics were, but at the time it seemed hilarious. Like moving someone's Christmas Tree from the curb to their front porch - we would have been laughing about that for a week. It was just a thing some of the kids did in the junior high school years - we all went on to college and later became succesful white collar criminals. Not that I'm saying it's ok but I can't imagine the kids today are that different or less inclined to seek that cheap thrill. We never stole cars or headlights, though one friend did have a wierd obsession with snapping off car antennae, which I did not like and seemed to cross the line. |

You may see it as normal. I suppose the URGE to do mischief is normal. I certainly did my share. But we can control it, and I think it's not just a stuffy thing to do. Showing our kids where the boundaries are is a duty we have to them. It improves us all. Not to mention the value of the property we might save. |

Good point Tom. Hey Moose, if you grew up in Maplewood and now a homeowner here, when did you live in BK in/around Boerum Hill? |

Re: graffiti on the back walls of the library; it took 3 men and a heavy duty power washing unit hauled on a trailer about 6 hours to remove. No matter how you look at it, that costs a lot of money...your taxes...mine too |

I agree graffitti sucks, but having lived in a few neighborhoods where my apt. front got tagged occasionally - you don't need a power washer to remove spray paint - elbow grease, a scrubbie and brake fluid does the trick on porous walls. I would think bright lights (and a camera) pointed at the wall would prevent tagging in the future - it has to cost less then 6 hours of town labor.

This reminds me of a scene from the movie the naked gun. The Anti-graffiti wall. When someone tries to spray paint it, it spray paints them back. Good movie. |

Yes, Lydia - your "elbow grease, scrubbie & brake fluid" method will remove some types of graffiti from some types of porous surfaces, but not all. I know a little about the processes. Over the 25 years I have worked with the township I have applied a lot of elbow grease - using all kinds of scrubbers and scrapers and brushes with many different formulas of paint and marker graffiti removers. Believe me, this recent attack on the back of the Main Library building was massive and it would have taken 10 times longer to remove without the power washer. In addition to the time and labor saved, the power washer uses no chemicals of any kind, only hot water, which poses virtually no threat to plants, birds, animals and humans. What really breaks my heart is that the amount of graffiti and litter and malicious damage to our parks and buildings seems to be increasing each year. Perhaps it is time to think about security lights and cameras.

I did a couple of things in jr high that I'm not proud of. I got caught in 2 of the cases, and the joint effect of the police and my parents backing up the police, stopped that stuff right there. Pretty strong language was used, and some very serious restrictions by my father. These included direct apology to the adults affected, my working off the cost to address. A level of public shame and restriction. I do think we're too accepting of this sort of thing in a kids will be kids way, or make excuses for it based on family circumstance, and that encourages. |

CG You need to come clean about your childhood indiscretion. Did getting caught result in the Cynical nomenclature? Otherwise, would we be reading posts from SassyGirl? |

Brooklyntonj - I lived in Mplwd from 1965-1979, lived in Ft Greene from 1989-2002 and now I'm in SO. And I also agree with Tom R. I wasn't trying to say that we shouldn't try to deter our kids from causing mischief or that they shouldn't be punished. I was just saying that the fact that it happens was not unusual when I was a kid and don't find it that unusual now. |

Hey, Moose - I grew up in Ft. Greene! I moved out of my parents home back in the early 1970s, and they no longer live in Brooklyn, but I love to see the old neighborhood featured in various newspaper articles. Did you live anywheres near Cumberland St.? |

Ok Moose, just making sure you're legit. You must've lived near the now Atlantic Mall. Amazing what they're doing downtown these days... Even though there is a lot of mischief and vandalism in Maplewood, I still find it amazing that we can be so close to crime-ridden cities and still be relatively safe and have such low crime. Its like night and day. |
