I had a few rolls at Samuri in Millburn tonight and they have a big sign out front "Coming soon to Maplewood Village - Samuri Sushi". I'm guessing it will go on the corner next to the pub. Can't wait, won't have to drive to millburn or summit. |

Yum, yum, yum. I love Samuri. We only went to Waterlillies on occassion when we wanted to sit down & eat. The food was never that great. Although, it was always packed so I'm surprised that Waterlillies shut down. Anyone know why? |

My babysitter saw something on the CBS 2 news a while back about the "dirtiest" restaurants in NJ .. Although I didn't see the piece, she told me Waterlillies was on the list with bad rodent problems! |

I'm glad Waterlilies is leaving. I was sitting at the sushi bar there and saw a big fat roach slowly clambering around the fish behind the display in front of me.

EWWWWWWW! We were never impressed with Waterlillies. Both the Chinese food and the sushi were always mediocre when we were there. (Which wasn't very often.) Am sooo psyched that Samuri is coming in! |

Joan- One of the nice things about Samuri is that they have really good options for people who don't do sushi, unlike a lot of other sushi places. TS got a pork dish there that was wonderful. The do the full Bento Box thing, etc. |

Thanks we will definitely give it a try when it opens. Does anyone know if the Waterlillies in Summit has also closed? It always seemed much nicer than the Maplewood location. |

If you are looking for good chinese, I highly recommend Great Wall on SO Ave. I know the place looks bad, but their food is excellent and they deliver quickly. They have no dining room and are take out/delievry only. The same cute man always comes to our house. Like I said, it looks gross, but it's great! |

Gosh with several other sushi options nearby, I was hoping we would get a Thai, GOOD Indian, Spanish, or some other interesting place to eat. I wasn't too impressed with Samurai in Millburn, quite honestly. They're not bad, but I think Sakana in South Orange is much better. Either way, anything's better than Waterlillies!!! |

I'm loyal to Haru. I eat in or take out from there about 3 times a month. I tried Sakana once and just didn't think it was as good - but I got it to go near their closing time so that might have had something to do with it. I'll try Samurai if it comes to Maplewood, but it'll have to be something really impressive to get me to switch from Haru. |

My husband got sick after eating General Tso's Chicken from Waterlillies a couple of weekends ago. Food has never been that good there. Planned to never go there again, so it's good they're leaving. Love to have good sushi in town. Also, I hear there's another nail place going in to the former Cornercopia space, next to the pub. Just what we need! |

Dego, To satisfy your Indian craving go to Caribbean Cuisine. Their food is primarily Indian influenced, but also has Spanish and Chinese influence as well. Great stuff at great prices. They're in a lousy location--so business is way too slow--especially for the quality of the food. To get there from Maplewood, take Valley St. toward South Orange. Turn right at light onto 1st (just before you reach South Orange Ave). It's on the right side. Here's their website (menu's on there) http://www.caribbeancuisine.net/ |

ril, My Trinidadian in-laws will disown me and my wife's going to make me sleep on the couch if they ever read this thread, but I can't give an adequate description of either. I suggest going there and asking Vidya about any of the food. She and her husband own the restaurant. She'll answer your questions and will probably give you a taste. They serve their food zesty but mild, but be warned if she asks you if you want pepper while she's putting together your dish, she's asking if you want pepper sauce. That stuff is really hot and great on their "Curried Chicken Roti". Roti, by the way, is a flat bread like a flour tortilla. When you order roti they'll ask if you want it wrapped or on the side, basically wrapped is like having a burrito, on the side you use the roti to scoop up the curried chicken, stewed beef or whatever you a get a roti with. There are so many great items on their menu, I don't know where to begin. I always get a curried chicken roti (on the bone). Very sloppy, very yummy (ask Amandacat who aparently makes strange noises indicating delight while eating them). Stewed chicken, oxtail, you can go wrong. Like I said the best thing to do is ask Vidya. If you sit down you can BYOB. I recommend Guinness or a heavy porter with the curried chicken. |

Mmmmmmm, doubles. They're basically a chick pea mix with lots of garlic and spicy pepper sauce* wrapped in two rotis (hence the term "doubles"). Delicious breakfast treat in Trinidad, washed down with an ice cold Coca-Cola in a green glass bottle. (*This is a total guess as to the actual incredients, but they are good! And vegetarian!) |

I really enjoy the veggie rotis from Caribbean Cuisine. I add hot sauce, but be forewarned, their hot sauce is super hot. Tabasco is sweet in comparison! The shrimp wontons are also really yummy if you're in the mood for something fried. |

I didn't like the food at waterlilies. I'm a vegetarian and my cuke rolls always tasted like fish. Miso soup there used to be good, but it really has sucked the past couple of years. Samurai Sushi will be a welcome addition. I ate there once and they had tempura and edamame, so don't worry, Joan! |

Ril, Caribbean food is distinctive in flavor. It's so good, you'll be hooked for ever. Before my husband met me, he had never had a roti or chicken curry and now he craves it. I haven't been to caribbean cuisine yet, but with all the review I think that's where dinner is coming from tonight. |

We love Caribbean Cuisine...and go there nearly once/week. Another item on the menu to try are the shrimp wontons (fried or steamed)....they are surpringly delicious...and whatever sauce they give you to dip them in is addicting! And I love the stewed chicken with spinach rice and plantains. You all are making me hungry! |

Joe, Thanks for suggesting Caribbean Cuisine - I know it well, and it's still our favorite place to eat in the area. But it truly does NOT satisfy my craving for good Indian food at all. I find the two cuisines very different. But to answer your question, Phenix - CC is better than any other caribbean place I've been - even the ones out in Brooklyn. I highly recommend the shrimp wonton, the GINORMOUS roti, and if you ever see the stewed chicken with red beans on the specials menu - go for it!!! |

Phenixrising, J&J and Caribbean Cuisine are both very good. The difference is that J&J is Jamaican Style and Caribbean Cuisine is Trinidadian Style. Depends on which style you prefer. |
