Been there once on a dare. Not appealing.

Instead, Make a right at the Buffet's front door and quietly proceed down the street (Academy) to the delicious Heart & Soul Restaurant (near Dominoes). Order anything. Bring along some Belgian ale. They're closed Mon/Tues.

It's like a Sizzler gone really really bad. But I've only been there once over 5 years ago.

I wouldn't recommend it either. Last time I was there the food was terrible and the atmosphere was even worse.

The owner died recently. I don't what impact if any this will have on the place.

I heard that they sold (or are selling) their liquor license to the place that is replacing Georgio's.

BTW... anyone here ever actually go to the family buffet for a drink!?

Years ago this place used to be a Chinese restaurant called Alex Eng's, owned by the same guy that just died. The food was bad even then. Several years ago he changed to the Family Buffet. Used to go in for a drink once and a while when it was Alex Engs, drinks were bad too.

Alex Eng's - my mom got take out from them for me when I was about seven years old, home sick from school - and we found a dead bee in the chow mein. Took me years to eat chinese food again. I can't imagine that crazy buffet place being an improvement.
:-(

Yikes...I'm glad I never went. I have been meaning to get to Heart and Soul though. What kind of food is it? Is it Soul Food or BBQ like Famous Daves? I'm looking forward to giving it a go :-)

Iggy: Chef Jesse of Heart and Soul calls it Southern comfort food with a French slant. For example, his apricot barbeque sauce is traditional, with an interesting twist from the apricot flavor--subtle, but not overpowering. His gumbo is similarly familiar yet different. It is really quite good, subtle flavors that go beyond normal southern food but close enough to taste like home.

About as far from the neon colored desserts and MSG-laden buffet food as you can get--which is what Family Buffet does. Even my kids can't stomach that place.

Family Buffet - heard about the bad food ... know about the bad facade.

Don't knock the Family Buffet if you didn't try it. They have a splendid selection of food to please any appetite. Besides, S.O. is turning into a food court so why not a buffet style eatery. Did anybody see my bib?

Ed:

I tried the Family Buffet along with a group of 19 of my friends. There was unanimous agreement about the poor food and ambiance. I would never give a poor recommendation of a place I hadn't tried.

Katie--the new place on Irvington Ave. is called Kiwi's. It's in the spot where the old Afghan restaurant was. The sign outside says it specializes in Italian/Soul Food--certainly an interesting combination.

Haven't had a chance to try it yet--has anyone else?
