P.S. The kid with the glasses isn't freaked out on Dimetapp...he's just going through that lovely eight year old "I promise I won't make a face this time" phase. |

Hotsauce is 5 years old and just came off the track - she'll get spayed on Thursday or Friday. Aren't they just the most amazing dogs? There are dog tracks all over Florida, unfortunately. But there is a fantastic rescue group in Hialeah that has open visits every Sunday, and adopts out about 100 dogs a year. Deb |

Wow - five years is a long time - my Jack was on the track for five as well, but the rescue people said he was unusual. My female, Harley, was only at the track for about two years, which is about average. Were they breeding Hotsauce?(great name) She looks very sweet - best of luck! |

Deb - You did a good thing: "Greyhounds have been used for hunting and coursing in the Middle East and Europe for at least 5,000 years, but it was not until the 1920s that greyhound racing became a moneymaking form of entertainment in America. That decade and the next five saw an explosion in the number of tracks nationwide, as patrons were drawn in by the combination of gambling and the seemingly harmless spectacle of beautiful dogs out for a run. In the 1920s the International Greyhound Racing Association, an industry organization, was formed to regulate racing and try to control industry corruption. Its modern successor is the National Greyhound Association. All racing greyhounds today are registered with the NGA. Greyhound racing reached its peak in the 1970s. Since then, growing public awareness of the mass killing of unwanted dogs and the inhumane conditions rampant in racing kennels has steadily undermined patronage at the track. So has growing competition from casinos, lotteries and other forms of gambling. Greyhound racing is a dying industry, but has continued to survive in part due to legislative handouts tracks have received across the country. As long as the industry remains in existence, thousands of greyhounds every year will continue to suffer and die." http://64.233.161.104/search?q=cache:JzOB0rdWn00J:www.grey2kusa.org/Racing/histo ry.html+history+of+greyhound&hl=en |

Mem - thanks for posting that info. It's so important to spread the word about the and exploitation and slaughter of these wonderful dogs. There's also great info at www.greyhoundog.org I think Jack is a fawn boy, right? What does Harley look like (picture please ). Love the name Harley - it sounds so fast! I wanted to name her Jetta...sounds kinda sleek and fast and feminine...but the boys thought it would confuse and upset her (Hotsauce was her racing name). Joan - Thank you for your sentiments. She is already loved. And she sends regards to the cat on your lap. |

Ooo! The Maplewood greyhound addiction is spreading! Welcome to the gang, Debbie. We have 2 of those 40 mph couch potatoes at home. Sweetest dogs on the face of the earth. Looking forward to hearing how Hotsauce adjusts to her new home. Have fun with teaching her the stairs! If you need help with anything, let us know. Scott and I are happy to help. We've been addicted to ours (Inca and Maya) for ~7 years now...

Two brindles! Inca and Maya are brilliant names - very creative. We had a a greyhound when we lived in Maplewood - she looked very much like Maya. Unfortunately Amy died a few months after we moved to Florida. We just brought Hotsauce home, and other than confusing berber carpet with grass she's doing great. Mem - you're right, 5 is an unusually long racing career. Amy was only 2 and a half when we got her. So where's the picture of Jack? . Deb - thanks! I told the boys that Cassius is thinking of moving to sunny Florida, and they are psyched. |

What do you mean hiding out? It took me less than a day to find this thread. Red is a red fawn, too. His race name was Red E Now. He was retired at two years of age, so we think he flunked out of racing, which is good news for him and us. He's tall for a greyhound and 80 pounds. Here he is on his favorite spot. Note the rippled muscles on his shoulders!

Good thing you have pictures, Tom, 'cause in another year, those muscles will be nothing more than floppy flab! Happens to the best of them. Hard for me to believe now that Inca was EVER toned for the track!

How long does it usually take? He's been off the track for 19 months now. That's a great picture, Debby. I guess I wouldn't mind him getting a bit softer. He makes an awful pillow. We napped on that couch Saturday, and I think he slept better than I did. |

Harley is so beautiful in the meadow! And I love the white tip of her tail. Jack looks like a sphinx waiting for that roadkill. P.S. LOVE your kitchen! I can't make out the drawer pulls though...dog bones? |

Who knew there was so much cabinet hardware with a grape motif? Great site...thanks. And lovely dogs all. My pugs are the antithesis of the grays. Perhaps one day I will be ready for a gentle, quiet, graceful dog instead of two hyper, loud, obnoxious ones. Not sure I'd want a dog that was taller than me though. |

Height isn't much of a problem, but strength might be. Come meet Red. He's about as big as a grey gets. When he jumps and tugs on the leash, it could pull you down if you are both small and unalert. By the way, Debby, mem and and Barb and I (and Barb's husband and my wife and one of my daughters) all got together with our greys at Echo Lake park. Inca (Barb's) couldn't come because it's not an ideal social setting for her. |

I remember reading about that, and was way jealous. Going to pick out Hotsauce was a real treat because the kennel in Hialeah gives them lots of "turnout" time, so there are always 6-8 greys running around in the shade. They're so much more dog-like when they're with other greys. Outgoing and playing with tennis balls and frisbees! |

I just looked again and am amazed at how good looking hotsauce (and your sons) and Harley and Jack look. They put such big smiles on my face. mem, you're a good photographer, but that's no surprise. You got to pick your dog, Debby? We didn't. We went through the phone interview and then we got a call saying "pick up your dog tomorrow at the kennel." That was it, plus a very short training session. And Red hasn't shown any interest at all in playing with frisbees or balls. He will chase dogs who are chasing balls, though. In general, he doesn't "get it" with playing with people or toys. But he is very affectionate, and he does run and jump around with dogs. |

When we got Amy in NJ it was the same thing: filled put a form and had a phone interview and got the call one night. This organization is big enough and lucky enough to have a facility (2 buildings rented from a racing kennel) that you can have your pick. Right now they have 70 dogs for adoption! Actually, though, Hotsauce picked us. She came and leaned on me, and then on Aaron (the older son), and followed us around. Here's the group, if anyone's interested: http://www.friendsofgreyhounds.org |
