For the first time today I noticed our little post office! Another thread made me think of this - but since the trees and bushes have been cut down the place looks downright classy. I stood across the street stupefied at how lovely this little building really is - now that we can see it as an entire elevation. I am one of many architects in town. I happen to tend toward very stodgy, classically correct buildings. I feel like I have been momentarily seduced by the gleam of a 1960's streamline design. This must be included in the historical survey of Maplewood. |

Gearing up for the "lets not move the post office" debate? I agree. It is a cool structure, but there is talk already about relocating the post office to use that space differently. Heres hoping they dont just raze the building and put up a parking lot. |

They want to keep the window operation of the PO in the village just not the back office stuff. THe back office stuff (there's a term for it but I'm blanking) would go to Springfield Ave. Seems to me they could keep the front and lop off the back for parking. |

(Thread drift...) I would hate to see the convenience of window service move to SA. I regularly ship packages and do so on my way to catch the train. Having to lug these via car to the PO would be a major hassle and time drain. As far as I'm concerned, PO service (excluding "back office" activities) is something that belongs in the village. I know there's lots of debate about how many services belong in the village but I, for one, think PO services should stay. That said, I am relatively new to Maplewood and thought that the PO building stuck out like a sore thumb in comparison to the tone and architecture of the rest of the village. I'll have to take a fresh look now that some of its inner self has been revealed...

I agree! I am at the PO every single day of the week. Sending out packages. I would miss having FOH operations there ALOT. But thankfully most of what I send is small, so if it came to it I could adapt. BUt I dont want to.

Might as well keep the PO on Maplewood Ave. If they tear it down, I'm sure it will just be replaced with a realtor or nail salon. |

I seriously doubt the USPS will even consider moving their services until their lease is up. Apparently they had a tiny shop on Baker Street before this 'new' building was built and everyone rejoiced at the facility and services provided. Times change, but I still like the idea of a downtown post office. I use the branch on SA sometimes and it's not as crowded. R |
