I've been craving a salad. Been making my own but it's not satisfying ;-) Any recommendations for a local place? Thanks!

Celebrated Foods has great, creative salads. I miss the days when i was on maternity leave and i could go there all the time with the kiddo for lunch!

New World (the mostly take-out/catering place) right by Celebrated, has excellent salads too.

In addition to Celebrated, Village Trattoria makes some nice salads. Their Greek salad is pretty good. Also, I haven't had it but Arturo's advertises salads now and their salada pizza is really good, so it might be worth a shot.

Mmmh.... salad pizza. There was a place where I went to college that had all kinds of salad pizza and calzone. Never saw it again. Great stuff.

Anybody remember "Poor Henry's", that ramshackle but extremely homey and popular eat&drink place on the woodsy end of Eagle Rock Avenue in (I think) Roseland? I must've enjoyed their chef salad (along with a Bass) for lunch at least once every week from 1990-1992.

The restaurant is long gone, but the salad lives on. Here's a recreation of it, twisted my way:

*1/4 Lb. baked turkey breast, julienned to 2 or 3 inches long;
*1/4 Lb. Virginia ham, julienned to 2 or 3 inches long;
*1/4 Lb. Swiss cheese, julienned to 2 or 3 inches long;
*1/2 head, iceberg lettuce leaves, chopped to bite size;
*1/4 Lb. bleu cheese, crumbled to 1/2" pieces;
*1/4 Lb. tomato bruschetta in olive oil;
*1 large carrot, cleaned and longitudinally shredded into thin strings;
*Paul Newman's (or Your Fave) Ceasar Salad or Vinagrette Dressing...

*Place bleu cheese and bruschetta in large bowl, mixing until cheese is coated nicely with oil.
*Add turkey and ham, mixing until there's no oil pooling at bowl bottom.
*Add lettuce, mixing till ingredients are evenly distributed.
*Add whatever amount of salad dressing gets you off.
*Top (artistically) with swiss cheese and carrot strings.

Easily serves 4 as a side, or 2 as a main dish.
Enjoy.

-s.

BTW: Please alert me if you're aware of any semi-local eatery serving this type of labor-intensive chef salad. Thankey!

Katie...Fuddruckers on Rt 22 is now a Hooters!

Is there another Fuddruckers in this area?

As for the query re; salads, I was in Livingston Mall the other day and there is a new salad only outlet at the food court (the bowls looked enormous) with a choice of about a dozen different kinds of salad.

Debby- I think I might actually have eaten the Cobb salad at the Tick-Tock Diner many years ago, while having lunch with a client from Hoffman-La Roche. If I remember properly, the food was much more interesting than my lunch partner...

BTW, N/A: Chili's (!) has some very interesting salads, such as a boneless buffalo chicken salad that I particularly like.

Miss L,
The place in Livingston Mall is called Saladworks. I just discovered one in Jersey City near where I work, went on their website, and was thrilled to learn they moved into Livingston Mall, too. This place is awesome. Huge salads...good bread. Yum. Check it out if you haven't yet.

I'm also a big fan of the salads at Chili's, especially the Caribbean Salad.

The Millburn Diner makes an AWESOME Greek salad. You can order one on its own, but if you order one of the Greek entrees, you get a huge "side" version of the Greek salad. The entree and salad makes a large meal for 2 people!
