The Best Companies to Work For

The best company for which to work is Wegmans Food Markets, a 67-store supermarket chain in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, and (coming soon) Maryland. That's the word from FORTUNE magazine, which annually creates its list of "100 Best Companies to Work For."

The list is compiled using a number of criteria, including the policies and culture of each company. Also considered are the opinions of each company's employees. If Wegmans lives up to it's very unusual motto, it's no wonder they are No. 1 on this list. The motto: "Employees first, customers second." The customers must not feel second rate, though, since the store posted 2004 sales of $3.4 billion.

What makes a company good to work for?
Pack on the benefits: Top-ranked Wegmans offers its employees health care, a defined contribution retirement plan, a 401K plan, and an employee scholarship program that has given nearly $54 million in tuition assistance to 17,000 employees since it began in 1984.
