Um, aren't they building something near the SO train station? Like a movie theater or something? Did they forget to finish it? What goes on? Not since the panama canal has anything taken so long to build. I know this has been discussed before, but anyone who moved to town in the last two years might be wondering what that foundation is for. |

I believe that's where the SOPAC is supposed to go. I remember about 10 or so years ago hearing a rumor that South Orange was going to build a movie theater. I don't know where or why that rumor started and I don't think it was ever a possibility. |

I thought that the SOPAC site contained a multiplex. Anyway - is it still being worked on, or has it run into some kind of trouble? |

They started constuction of SOPAC this past fall. SOPAC will have a live theater with 425 seats and five movie theaters. Construction is expected to be completed in the sping of 2006. They stopped work two weeks ago because an oil tank was discovered and was removed the other day. The soil was tested and construction resumes within one week. |

SOPAC is supposed to contain a five theater movie complex. It was announced at this week's BOT meeting that two oil tanks had been discovered, and work would resume shortly. An interesting sidenote is that the owner of the Afghan rug shop, which had been demolished a year ago, leaving a hole in the ground, appeared before the planning board to obtain approval of an amended plan. It appears that he filled the hole with fill from from the SOPAC site. This required approval from the Village which he had not obtained, and the planning board conditioned its approval upon a certificate stating the the soil was not contaminated. |

really? Completed by 2006?? And while we are asking general questions: what is happening next to the old shoprite? Is looks terrible. At the very least the fence should look good, not broken and falling apart. |

Be sure to check out the "South Orange Specific" section of the Boards to see all the gory details of the "Coming Soon" Arts Center. Do a search for "SOPAC", "Village Market" or "Beifus" and you'll see a ton of information. Note that the term "multiplex" for SOPAC is misleading. To my knowledge the movie theater is not expected to show first run blockbusters like Spiderman or "Meet the Fockers". I believe it supposed to show more "family oriented" or "independent" films. |
