Event: CPR Marathon
Time: 10:00 AM - 5:30 PM
Information: The Maplewood First Aid Squad will be holding a CPR Marathon on Saturday January 22nd and Sunday January 23rd. Three courses will be held each day. Infant & child safety (10:00-12:00), pediatric CPR (12:30-3:00) and adult CPR (3:30-5:30). Tax deductible donations are $35.00 for any one class, $45.00 for any two and $55.00 for all three. SPACE IS LIMITED - PLEASE RESERVE YOUR SPACE ASAP.

Not to rain on the parade, but can these "donations" really be considered tax deductible? The amounts are consistent with fees charged at comparable courses at Red Cross locations and the Adult School (for example), so it would seem that the students are receiving a service with that "fair market value" aren't they?

I think this is similar to purchasing Girl Scout cookies or buying items at church sales, etc. If the value of the item or service received is equal to or greater than the amount paid, then there is no deduction. However, if you pay a premium (such as for a charity dinner, for example), the difference is deductible, I believe.

Sorry for the thread drift, but 'tis the (tax) season so this is on my mind.
