After many years of wanting to try it, I think I'm ready. Can anyone give me any info you think I need to know, especially on where to go?

I know people who go up to the Rockefeller estates in Westchester -- they say the XC skiiing is great there. I think you take the GW Bridge into Westchester, then it's not much far north of Yonkers.

The reservation -- if there was snow of course. I recently was speaking with someone who said the CC skiid in the res and I'm thinking of tracking down some used skis -- I love cross country skiing, but haven't done it in years.

High Point state park had a x-c ski rental concession and some groomed trails a few years ago.

I always go to the Maplewood Country Club. You're not supposed to trespass but no one has ever tracked me down and kicked me off. It's always completely empty and peaceful. I've also gone in the reservation but unless there's a lot of snow you end up skiing over lots of branches and stuff. I've skied Springfield Avenue too. Now that was cool.

I've only x-c once and got the hang of the coordination pretty fast because I was working out with a Nordick track machine around that time.

If there's enough snow, parts of the reservation can do for an easy and close afternoon. If there's enough snow, the Appalachian Trail section in Stokes State Forest is good. If there's not enough snow, let me recommend Boyce's Corner, NY (near Syracuse) or St-Jean de Matha, Quebec, for the ultimate in East Coast XC skiing.

There's wonderful x-country skiing in Prospect Park, Brooklyn. The incredulous looks I'd get lugging my skis on the subway alone made it worth it.
The Rockefeller estate I've skied is Pocantico Hills, north of Yonkers; beautiful, but I wouldn't recommend it for a beginner as it's hilly.

As a former Park Sloper, if there's enough snow on the roads surrounding the park, you can get some good snow on the roads that slope down from the park. I've seen the x-country skiers during snowstorms, loving every minute of it.

Fond memries of XC skiing down Washington St. in Hoboken during a snowstorm when we lived there...saw tons of skiers and one guy pulling his (thrilled) toddler in a file drawer with a rope tied to the handle....

We go to High Point State Park every year and enjoy it a lot. You can rent skis there if needed, the trails are groomed, and there are easy-to-hard trails.

If it would only snow........

Here is the info on High Point State Park, we go there several times a year - except the last 2 years there hasn't been enough snow :-(

Another place I've been meaning to try is one in the Catskills:
