Having turned 50 recently....! Home-made CD of favorite songs (husband made this utilizing Napster). If into flowers/gardening: Big fat gift certificate for same to high end nursery, with some cool tools/gloves as physical presents (got this). Didn't get this, but: high end night on the town to hear somebody like Michael Feinstein, or a play. Must include really good dinner, ease of transportation, hair appointment. Sentimental: jazzy day/weekend to somewhere in past with real resonance. Or, party with her all time best girl friends (preferably surprise). Family portrait at a studio, or pre-paid promise of same. Something small, yet extravagant maybe that ties to her inner self that she may have had to ignore due to time/family commitments. An electric guitar? |

Soulful - see what happens when you don't include a price range. Berry - you do have lovely ideas! 50 came for me a few years back. Husband surprised me by inviting my girlfriends & their husbands and our family to dinner at a local restaurant. At this age, I pretty much have everything I want, and can buy whatever strikes my fancy (my fancy tends to be pretty much basic and rarely over the top). Other than finding a way to have more time with my family, donations to a cause close to my heart would make me very happy. |

You don't say if you have children, but a family weekend away is nice, someplace she can relax if she wants but you can have family time too. Don't forget to get her something special for herself, either a Spa Day at the Hilton or nice jewelry. My mom turned 50 three weeks before we got married so we had a small surprise dinner party for her at a restaurant.

Spa day AND Jewelry. As well as a party IF and only if she wants one. No doubt. Don't screw this one up, you'll never live it down if you do. |

The idea of a spa day bores me to tears. I would rather have a nice weekend away with my family (or just hubby). Maybe a small piece of Jewelry or a nice dinner with a group of friends. I'd get your favorite two or three couples and go out to a nice dinner and have a real fun night. |

A pair of socks. With lots of cash, a plane ticket to Bermuda, reservations at Elbow Beach Resort and a diamond necklace stuffed in them. |

He's made up for it since then, I swear! Plus, I booked a really beautiful weekend for our tenth anniversary, and he's promising diamonds, so we're good. "some people give socks for special occasions..personally I think event gifts make for better commemorations than things gifts, usually." |

For my mothers 70th birthday i ordered her a necklace from wellsware.com they are located in NYC.You can send in pictures of your family and they will make the pictures into charms that go on a necklace or a bracelet. Her necklace had 8 towosided charms. One of her when she was little, one with her parents, wedding picture, one charm each for her four kids and on the opposite side her gandchildren and other pictures from when she was little. The price was about 550.00 dollars but thats becuase of the quantity of charms and extras i had them put in.It makes a wonderful conversation piece.check out their website for pictures and more information. |

Well, thanks for all the realistic (and unrealistic) suggestions - it's all a bit overwhelming - alot to think about. We ARE having dinner at Jocelyn's with 2 of our closest friends one of whom also has a birthday then. What are her likes? Sheesh, hard to put my finger on it... jewelery certainly, travel. But mostly she likes....not going to work. Lemme think more about it. Any suggestions on where to get quality jewelery and/or gems cheap, or inexpensively?

How well do you know her boss? My husband called mine a couple of time to request a day off for me so we could do something special for my birthday or our anniversary - always a great surprise.. |

Soulful, how about explaining in a bit more detail on this message board exactly why you want to celebrate your wife's birthday and why you want not just friends but her neighbors to know how special she is. Then, direct her to the web site, or print out the answers & include them in her birthday card. If I found such a posting from my hubbin' on Maplewood Online, I'd melt. (Except for the part about "cheap" jewelry. He'd have to answer for that.) ;-) |

A trip. Depending on time and finances, take the train to Montreal for the weekend. Get a private car. That's very romantic. If a smaller budget is required, howzabout a night in the city; matinee show, dinner somewhere she'll really enjoy and one splurge night at the Plaza, Stanhope, Ritz, etc. |
