Hirem's in Fort Lee. I eat a hot dog maybe once a year, for that meal I choose Hirem's. |

Syd's in the Millburn Mall for dogs. http://www.hollyeats.com/Syds.htm I found that the cigarette smoke in Manny's was a bit overwhelming the two times that I've been there. Chris's Texas Weiner in South Orange (on the Ave) has great breakfast. I can't comment on the dogs.

Funny, I have never noticed any smoke at Manny's, and I consider myself very sensitive to smoke when I am eating (except in the Pub...for some reason it doesn't bother me there). I didn't even used to go to the Maple Leaf when it permitted smoking. Guess I just manage to go to Manny's when there aren't any smokers! |

The only place I'm going to think of when it comes to Texas Weiners is the White House. |

Manny's is awesome. Their breakfasts are a great value with large enough portions to let your children share. The extensive renovation they underwent over the past year really transformed the interior from a "greasy spoon" into a nice family restaurant. kevin, if they still allow smoking, it's only at the counter and I believe they have improved the ventilation system such that you don't notice it in the regular dining area. You may want to give them another chance. |

Syd's is really the best hot dog if you prefer a meat hot dog. I thought Manny's was made with meat when I first went and they didn't so my son and I left. Pork dogs are fine in a baseball stadium, but for my money, a real hot dog is a nathan's dog grilled, and Syd's is just as good, though quite pricey. |

I haven't been to Manny's in a little over a year, so maybe they did improve the ventilation. To be fair, the Texas Weiner's on South Orange Ave was too smokey one time I was in there and I walked out without ordering.

Stop at Manny's all the time (usually to load up on breakfast before braving Home Depot). Never really noticed smoke, and I hate smoking in restaurants. Everyone is friendly, food is great and cheap. |

We've been to Manny's several times and liked it every time. It's better than most of the other nearby diners that we've been to. Don't let the name throw you off. |

I take the family (kids age 6 and 3) there for breakfest on the weekends. The staff is very friendly. I hear many of the staff referring to customers by name. That's my kind of place! |

I also had a disappointing experience there a few months ago. We went to the one across from Home Depot because of all the positive comments on MOL. It was smokey, there were flies buzzing around, and the waitress treated us like we were interrupting her while she was in the delivery room (and it was not busy). The bathroom was really clean though, so that's something good. |

Organizer, I did let the waitress know and they didn't charge us for the hot dog. Reading the many posts in praise of Manny's certainly would lead one to believe that my experience was an anomoly. HOwever, when I have a bad experience at a restaurant, especially when it is my first or second time there, I seldom go back - I just don't feel comfortable doing so. |

I recently read that Texas Weiners are, in fact, a New Jersey creation. For all I know, this is the only place you can get them. There are many places on Springfield Ave and Rt 22 that sell them. I haven't been to Syd's, but I notice that all those ugly places I've been to in the sorry-looking Millburn Mall have reasons to recommend them. DRUG FA is fun just because it's so badly laid out. (The IR is unlit, so we now call it DRUG FA.) Tabatchniks has excellent halvah, and their lox etc. are pretty good, too. The bagels at Sonny Amster's bakery are good, and their hamentaschen are excellent. Haven't been to the other places, but if this is a trend, we should try all of them. |

Tom, thanks for the giggle about Drug Fa. Oh, I love halvah too. It's my hands down favorite confection in the world. Tabatchnik's chicken soup in a pot (in the big white tub) is also good, especially if you're feeling too sick to make your own. Sonny Amster's also has good challah and other breads, as well as chocolate danish/babka. |

Been to Manny's, Syd's, Hot Dog Johnny's (in Buttsville, where you accompany your dog with a frosty mug of buttermilk), Toby's Cup in Phillipsburg, Callahan's, and others. They are all fine with their unique character. But, I my humble opinion, absolutely nothing compares to Rutt's Hut - deep fried puppies - crispy on the outside, tender on the inside. And the onion rings..... Oops! I drooled on my keyboard. |

Best burger for lunch is at a bar called the Roscommon House, in Union, on Vauxhall Road, the other side of Route 22. An old-fashioned bar, but with fresh and real hamburger meat, and so fresh it takes about 15 minutes to make it the way you want it. Be warned---it's an old fashioned "saloon" but friendly and serves hot food from about 11 AM to 5:30 PM only, but the burgers are worth the ride. |
