"Not One Damn Dime Day" - A Boycott of the Bush Inauguration
Thursday, January 20th

This is a novel idea to boycott the war, the administration, etc. Below is the description from http://www.carrboro.com/dimeday.html

"Inauguration Day, Thursday, January 20th, 2005 is "Not One Damn Dime Day" in America. On "Not One Damn Dime Day" those who oppose what is happening in our name in Iraq can speak up with a 24-hour national boycott of all forms of consumer spending. During "Not One Damn Dime Day" please don't spend money. Not one damn dime for gasoline. Not one damn dime for necessities or for impulse purchases. Not one damn dime for anything for 24 hours.

On "Not One Damn Dime Day," please boycott Walmart, KMart and Target. Please don't go to the mall or the local convenience store. Please don't buy any fast food (or any groceries at all for that matter). For 24 hours, please do what you can to shut the retail economy down. The object is simple. Remind the people in power that the war in Iraq is immoral and illegal; that they are responsible for starting it and that it is their responsibility to stop it.

"Not One Damn Dime Day" is to remind them, too, that they work for the people of the United States of America, not for the international corporations and K Street lobbyists who represent the corporations and funnel cash into American politics.

Not One Damn Dime Day" is about supporting the troops. The politicians put the troops in harm's way. Now 1,200+ brave young Americans and (some estimated) 100,000 Iraqis have died. The politicians owe our troops a plan -- a way to come home.

There's no rally to attend. No marching to do. No left or right wing agenda to rant about. On "Not One Damn Dime Day" you take action by doing nothing. You open your mouth by keeping your wallet closed. For 24 hours, nothing gets spent, not one damn dime, to remind our religious leaders and our politicians of their moral responsibility to end the war in Iraq and give America back to the people."

Other than hurting small businesses (big business won't really notice), what will this accomplish? Bush couldn't care less - I'm sure he won't even notice. The guys who will get hurt are the ones that sell bagels on the street, or the other daily purchases that you won't be making that day, and won't be doubling up on the next day.

If this makes you feel like you're doing something, great. But don't kid yourself into thinking you're going to be hurting anyone other than those you ultimately want to protect.

Sorry, but "Not One Damn Dime Day" doesn't sound like much of a protest.

It's the "Iraq invasion" of protests - it does nothing to address the real concerns, and it focuses on the wrong targets.

This is not a good way to protest the war and be heard...

Rather than not spending, why not send money to some worthy cause? That would be a positive action that would get their message out and help people, not hurt them...

Great - punish the people who live on gratuities for a day since you don't like the president's policies. The only people who will get this message are those who probably make the least money. I am sure they will understand the message the president is being sent when everyone is asked to stay home on Thursday.

More examples of the "smart" people trying to flex thier muscle.

General strikes like this only work in a much more clearly polarized political and economic environment, and have to part of a much larger and ongoing movement with traction. The last time we had circumstances in this country where that may have worked was Vietnam or Civil Rights, and even there I am not so sure it would have taken hold.

Waste of time, waste of energy, more empty symbolism. Best to heed the advice of the other posters.

Childish, stupid, and most importantly, hurtful.

What a moronic idea. This is why the left fails to enact policy, because it focuses on brain dead theatre of the symbolic instead of doing something that would have a real effect - like going to a gun show, getting high powered assault weapons legally, and taking out the most anti-gun control politicos from a distance. Talk about more bang for the buck.

I intended to show my displeasure with the current administration's policies by treating this Thursday like any other Thursday, but Art's suggestion sounds pretty good for that day or any day.
