As much as I enjoyed being a Delegate to the Republican Convention in NYC in September, campaigning for Bush-Cheney in New Jersey through early November, and watching the returns come in with my fellow New Jersey Republicans down the shore, I am now looking forward to attending several inaugural events in Washington, DC next Wednesday and Thursday. Wondering if any fellow MOL-ers will be there also. Our tentative schedule has my wife Marilyn and I leaving Maplewood on Tuesday afternoon, January 18th, picking up our daughter Mariah at Monmouth University, in West Long Branch, NJ, and staying overnight in Reistertown, MD with my cousin Gretchen at their farm. Wednesday the 19th Mariah and I have tickets to an event at The Ellipse at 4 PM called "A Celebration of Freedom". At 7 PM Marilyn and I have the NJ Ball at the Old Ebbitt Grill at The Atrium 675 15th Street NW. On Thursday, Marilyn, our older daughter Michaela, Mariah and I got tickets from our Democratic Congressman Payne: South Standing Yellow Tickets to the West Front of the Capitol. We are to enter the First St. SW gate at 9 AM whereas the Musical Prelude starts at 10:30 AM and the swearing in is at 11:30 AM. We have two tickets to the Inaugural Parade at 2 PM. Michaela and I have two tickets to a TBD Inaugural Ball at 7 PM Thursday. Michaela's employer, the National Journal's Congress Daily, has to publish twice on Inauguration Day but her Editor gave her time off to attend selected events with us. Mariah might stay with her sister Michaela in Georgetown. My brother Peter and his wife Tina and their 3 boys will squeeze us in on Wednesday and Thursday night . They live close to Capitol Hill and we might actually have to walk from their place to the Capitol since driving will be restricted. I suppose Michaela could walk over from the Watergate where her office is or take the Metro. Theoretically I have to teach class at NJIT in Newark at noon on Friday, but my boss has offered to teach it if I can't make it back. So we might even stay into the weekend. We are very excited about going to WDC for these Inaugural events, which are for us, a once in a lifetime experience. It would also be great to see fellow Maplewoodians or South Orangers down there also.

Way too much information, Ed, but do have a ball in DC with your ilk. |

Sorry Ed, but this Maplewoodian would rather subject himself to a hot coffee enema than be in DC next week. |

In my youth, I attended Jimmy Carter's inauguration, traveling from my home in Minnesota. A bunch of us wangled tickets to one of the balls (the invitations were transferable) and piled into a motor-home for the two-day drive to D.C. Like Ed, we had some kind of third-string tickets to stand on the plaza in front of the Supreme Court and watch the ceremony. Later we caught a glimpse of Carter in the parade, walking along Pennsylvania Avenue. The ball that evening, of which there were eight or nine, was pretty standard fare but fun. If you ever have the chance, I encourage doing it. Of course, if you’re a Democrat you only get your chance every twenty years or so, but we can still dream.

I've been invited to 2 bashes. The Military ball which this year is the must have tix and the Florida ball. Jeb Bush himself invited me so I'll probably attend the Florida ball as a result. Jeb's been a good friend over the years. |

jjkatz . I get this vision of Straw at a Dead show cursing all the damn, liberal commies. Someone passes him a jug of something spiked heavily and then the visions began. Who knows maybe thats how DUMBYA got his start talking to god. Ed-Have fun at the event, would love to go but I have to rearrange my sock drawer. Please don't criticize any grieving mother who protests at the event, you're a better man than that. |

Look for Straw's next post where he boasts that he will swear Bush in to office if Rehnquist is too ill to do it. |

Tom Carlson, Now that's a classy response to Ed's post. Pretty much the same old standard garbage from the rest of the gang in this thread though. |

"Reporters at Thursday's round-table also asked Bush about the high price tag for his second inaugural celebration and suggestions the $40 million gala, which is being paid for by private donations — much of it coming from lobbyists and corporations — be scaled down. "The inauguration is a great festival of democracy," he said. "People are going to come from all over the country who are celebrating democracy and celebrating my victory, and I'm glad to celebrate with them." Hmmm, The Outstanding Public Debt as of Jan. 14, 2005 is: $7,609,320,802,723.17 The estimated population of the United States is 295,320,862 so each citizen's share of this debt is $25,766.28. The National Debt has continued to increase an average of $2.17 billion per day since September 30, 2004! I say, “let them (the Bushies) eat cake!” Take the $40 million and invest in education, state funding, the unemployed, et al |

Overtaxed,Thanks for the kind words. Phenix, Uke and ParkBench,Strawberry’s problem is he doesn’t adhere to Shakespeare’s advice that “brevity is the soul of wit”. His first post here, about Jeb Bush, is short and really funny. Then he dilutes it with several of his standard libs-are-so-dumb posts. But he’s just a pup; maybe he’ll grow out of it someday. |
