This is one of my earliest posts
Jun 18 1995, 12:00 am As I don't have a lot on my mind today, I somehow got to wondering exactly what makes paprika paprika. Isn't it just ground chilli pepper or is there something far more subtle at work? Thanks for any help with this very important query.
The response
In Hugarian, the word for "pepper" is "paprika". This reffers to the red pepper which looks like a Cubanelle or Italian green pepper, but red. Paprika, the spice is the powder made from grinding dried Hungarian peppers (paprika) of a specific type. These are not the Hungarian cherry peppers or the Hungarian Wax peppers. Spanish "paprika" - a misnomer really - is made from an entirely different pepper called "Pimento". The best paprika comes from Kalocsa.

I think my first post was a nasty, drunken post.

Thanks, Dave. That was hardly my first post. I remember reading the net.bicycle newsgroup in 1985. Back then, newsgroup names started with either net or mod (for moderated). I started posting in 1985 or 1986, from The Rockefeller University, but I can't find those messages. Oh wait, here is one. I once googled myself and found some obscene jokes I posted in 1987. The guy who runs Poop Report calls me an Internet pioneer in this article about me, but I think that's overstating it. Hey, today is my birthday! |

Happy birthday. It's my wife's birthday, as well. I recall being on GEnie and/or Delphi in the late '80s, but can't find any relics from then except one about trains in China and another about getting an e-mail address for someone at Leeds University for some reason I can no longer recall. |

If Dave's wife and I had been raised in the south, we would have had a holiday, because it's Robert E Lee's birthday. |

Wow, that's so cool! Thanks, mjc. Now I know I share a birthday with Hans Hotter. What a great singer. And I studied voice under a student of his! And now I know he died in 2003! |
