Get a Jump on Spring! 1:30 and 3:00 Sun. Jan. 23 Pat Tratebas, owner of Cottage Gardens Landscape Design, will present talks, followed by Q and A sessions, on how to plan a landscape for the older home. A graduate of the Historic Preservation program at Drew University, Pat will show houses of various architecural styles and periods found in this area and make suggestions of plantings appropriate to them. In addition, she will provide tips on how to be "landscape detectives" and hunt for clues on your house's original plantings as well as provide sources on older plant varieties. There will be a pressed flower bookmark activity for the kids!

As a bonus, for those interested in the fascinating history of the Hilton section of Maplewood and two hundred year old Springfield Avenue, the "Historic Hilton and its Historic Highway" exhibit is still on view.

The Durand-Hedden House and Garden is at 523 Ridgewood Road, Maplewood 973-763-7712.

Just curious whether the event this Sunday is one 3-hour session or 2, since the original times were 1:30 and 3:30. Would very much like to fit it into my schedule.

Tara - Thanks for your interest. The talks by Pat Tratebas are at 1:30 p.m. and 3:00 p.m -- followed by informal Q & A sessions. The house will be open from 1:00 to 4:00 with several other things going on. The Jr. Docents will be running a pressed flower bookmark activity for kids, the exhibit on the fascinating history of the Hilton Section and Springfield Ave. will be on view and the Country Store will be open. We always try to have a variety of things happening to touch everyone's interest. Drop in. The whole thing is very informal and informative.
