I was recently trying to remember some animated tv specials that appeared in the late 70's. One was Rikki Tikki Tavi, which I found all over the internet (available for purchase on Amazon et. al.). But as I remember on the same night that RTT aired were at least two other animated specials. One was a non-disneyfied version of The Little Mermaid. The other was I think about a giant and his garden, but I can't remember more than images about that one. Might have been one more (assuming those three were 1/2 hour each). Anyone remember these? Any idea where I can get more info on them online? |

So after a little more searching I believe The Little Mermaid was made in 1973 and featured Richard Chamberlain as the narrator. Can't find much more info that that though. |

Rikki Tikki Tavi rocked! Funnily enough, according to Amazon it's being released on DVD on Jan 25 with the Yankee Doodle Cricket. The White Seal and The Cricket in Times Square DVD also comes out that day. I can't help with the Little Mermaid or the giant stories. But here's some other I remember watching: The Waterbabies Dot and the Kangaroo The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe The Hobbit I find myself trying to remember all this stuff from my childhood too. Don't have kids yet, but when I do I fear that I won't be able to stop myself and will force them to watch H.R. Pufnstuf, The Land of the Lost, The Bugaloos, Schoolhouse Rock, etc., wasting untold sums on Courageous Cat and Minute Mouse dvd box sets...

My son is heavily into Top Cat at the momenet -- he got a 4 CD set for Christmas -- something like 7 hours of Top Cat. If you have Comcast On Demand there are some great old cartoon under Boomerang and Classics -- Wizard of Oz series from the 60's and Hercules. Last weekend we watched lots of Dastardly Dog On Demand. I don't have issue with him watching good cartoons and there's nothing like snuggling up with a cup of hot chocolate and watching the Smurfs on a cold winter morning. When we tire of Top Cat we have the first few seasons of The Flintstones. |

Ah the White Seal! That might have been the 4th I was thinking of. Loved the Cricket in Times Square as well, great book and animated version. Don't remember Waterbabies or Dot but I have read LWW countless times and enjoyed the animated version (although not nearly as much as the book). Same with the Hobbit. Schoolhouse Rock is available on DVD, I will probably buy it for the kids when they get older. |

On Demand Rocks, that's all we watch now. I've finally got rid of all my blues clues tapes, and dora too. I never thought I'd see the smurfs again! It's cute watching it with my kids, as I watched it as a kid. |

On Demand is so great! I can say ONE cartoon and that's it. No "But MOM SpongeBob is on next". Isn't it freeing being done with Nick Jr? |

Liz Phair did a good cover of that song, mickey. They also had Lancelot Link, Secret Chimp on that show I believe. Schoolhouse Rocks is really good...the videos, the music, the book..my kids have really enjoyed it. My faves were usually not actual cartoons, but stop action and supermarionation...Gumby, The Thunderbirds, and of course, Davey and Goliath. You knew they were near the end of their run when Goliath looked dusty and Davey's hair was chipped. Astroboy was my first favorite cartoon (and Halloween costume)..I had no idea I was into anime until a couple of years ago when I saw the Astroboy comic book series. Kimba the White Lion was great...and of course...
But the way coolest cartoon was from the 60s...Rocky and Bullwinkle. |

Anyone watch Star Blazers? One of the first Anime shows to be on in the US. The kid's performer Ralph's World does a version of the Banana Split song so I hear it all the time! |

See ya...See ya. Hope you had a good good time. Da Dum! Hope ya have a good good mornin....To ya (or something like that). Loved the chuckle patch. They made me chuckle. What about The Jackson 5 cartoon. Loved that one. Oh - and Underdog, Rocky & Bullwinkle. My mom used to take us to Carol's, which was like a Burger King in upstate NY, to get the Rocky & Bullwinkle glasses they'd give away with a soda order. That was before the days of the Happy Meal.

Love the Banana Splits. How about the Barba Papas? I'm certain it was a Hanna-Barbara but I don't see it on this list : http://members.aol.com/vanman2677/hbserie.html |

Alg - Barba Papa - Smoo-ish looking creatures with look-alike children (except one that looked a bit like Cousin Itt)? My daughter had books, but I didn't know that there was a TV show. |

It's the New Zoo Review coming right at you. With lots of ??? animal and ?? things to do. How about the Jackson 5 Cartoon or The Brady Bunch cartoon? The New Zoo Review was a guilty pleasure of mine. It was really so lame but I remember being in 6th or 7th grade and watching everyday one summer. |

Occasionally I still catch it Saturday mornings really early. It's so creepy! A couple of months ago, they showed HR Pufenstuff on TV Land really late at night. It was almost scary watching it at night. That flute thing was bizarre. Ah heck, the whole thing is bizarre. |

My parents have HR Puff n Stuff videos. They bore me. My older sisters liked it -- I was more Super Friends, Smurfs, Richie Rich, Scooby Doo, Josie and the Pussycats ... all those ones on Boomerang. |
