President Has Second Thoughts About 'Bring 'Em On' WASHINGTON (Jan. 14) - President Bush says he now sees that tough talk can have an "unintended consequence." During a round-table interview with reporters from 14 newspapers, the president, who not long ago declined to identify any mistakes he'd made during his first term, expressed misgivings for two of his most famous expressions: "Bring 'em on," in reference to Iraqis attacking U.S. troops, and his vow to get Osama bin Laden "dead or alive." "Sometimes, words have consequences you don't intend them to mean," Bush said Thursday. "'Bring 'em on' is the classic example, when I was really trying to rally the troops and make it clear to them that I fully understood, you know, what a great job they were doing. And those words had an unintended consequence. It kind of, some interpreted it to be defiance in the face of danger. That certainly wasn't the case." On July 2, 2003, two months after he had declared an end to major combat in Iraq, Bush promised U.S. forces would stay until the creation of a free government there. To those who would attack U.S. forces in an attempt to deter that mission, Bush said, "My answer is, Bring 'em on." In the week after the Sept. 11 attacks, Bush was asked if he wanted bin Laden, the terrorist leader blamed for the attacks, dead. "I want justice," Bush said. "And there's an old poster out West, that I recall, that said, 'Wanted, Dead or Alive."' Recalling that remark, Bush told the reporters: "I can remember getting back to the White House, and Laura said, 'Why did you do that for?' I said, 'Well, it was just an expression that came out. I didn't rehearse it.' "I don't know if you'd call it a regret, but it certainly is a lesson that a president must be mindful of, that the words that you sometimes say. ... I speak plainly sometimes, but you've got to be mindful of the consequences of the words. So put that down. I don't know if you'd call that a confession, a regret, something." During his second debate last year with presidential challenger Sen. John Kerry, Bush was asked to name three instances in which he had made a wrong decision. At the time he declined to identify any specific mistakes.

Somehow, just somehow, I think Laura (unlike her husband) is literate enough to have asked him, "WHAT did you do that for?" as opposed to "WHY did you do that for?" God, he is such an imbecile. |

Jjkatz... your point is spot-on, but I'm afraid that you have just insulted imbeciles. There should be a word for a person who is a complete moron, (mis)guided by a sense of unfounded righteousness, in a leadership position he is totally unsuited for. Perhaps one day the word for such a person will be a "dubya". |

But your whining arguements about WMD'S are tired and... BORING If WMD's don't matter, and this war is a just and vital exercise that runs like a Swiss watch, what are you still doing stateside? Your country needs you! |

My country needs me more here confronting the likes of you. Translation: I'm too scared. How about this? I'll make you a deal...you enlist and ship out to Iraq, and I promise to only speak glowingly of the war effort. That way, you can go fight and die for what you believe in without abandoning your duty to your country here at home on the message boards. Drop me a line from Fallujah, so I'll know when to shut my liberal mouth. |

Actually, if you won the election, that means that there are more than enough people here to debate Madden, or does the entire effort rest on your shoulders? By the way, what does "the likes of you" mean? |

For a bunch of "winners", these conservatives sound awfully bitter and nasty. "The likes of you", "Your Kind", "By the way, are you short?". Makes you wonder how they would have reacted had they lost. It must be such a burden for them to have to live amongst a large majority of "Our Kind". If it all gets too much and you decide to leave, don't let the door hit ya on the way out. |

If we leave, who will pay for your existence? It's a burden to live here, but we're used to it. I'll pay for your sorry self whether we win or lose. It's how this country is set up. It's all about charity for those who don't measure up. |

The "conservative" states get more in handouts from the government, funded of course from the blue states where most of the country's wealth is generated. Of course, "conservative" parasites exist at the individual level too. |

Actually cjc, since "Your kind" is the majority here, we're paying for your sorry self. I hope you have good medical coverage that includes psychiatric care. A good therapist may help you with that problem you have with height, along with prescribing ritalin which may help your comprehension problems. |
