(Morristown) The New Jersey Theatre Alliance welcomes teenagers ages 13 to 18 (who are full-time students in grades 7-12) to submit their original poems for a Performance Poetry Jam contest as part of the eighth annual Family Week at the Theatre. Five very cool young poets will be selected to take their place alongside spoken word performance artists Gha’il Rhodes Benjamin, Lamont Dixon and The Mayhem Poets on Saturday, March 12 at 7:00PM at the Crossroads Theatre in New Brunswick for the Poetry Jam.

“Performance poetry is an exciting and new part of the theatrical experience,” says John McEwen, Executive Director of the New Jersey Theatre Alliance. “This Poetry Jam promises to be a highlight of Family Week, and we’re looking forward to providing opportunities for young poets to take the stage.”

In addition to the Performance Poetry Jam contest, the New Jersey Theatre Alliance has added two poetry events to this year’s Family Week at the Theatre – The Mayhem Poets and “Step Up to the Mike.” The Mayhem Poets will conduct a free Performance Poetry event at the Jersey City Museum, Jersey City, on Saturday, March 12 at 1pm, and at The Crossroads Theatre in New Brunswick at 4pm there’s “Step Up to the Mike” , a performance poetry workshop for teens hosted by performance artists Gha’il Rhodes Benjamin and Lamont Dixon.

Students interested in participating should send by mail (poem must be typed, double-spaced, on a 8 ½ - by-11 inch paper) or e-mail 2-3 original poems, approximately 3 minutes in length, along with their name, age, address, school, local paper and phone number to Magaly Roig, Manager of Programs and Services, New Jersey Theatre Alliance, 163 Madison Avenue Ste. 500, Morristown, NJ 07960 or you may e-mail mroig@njtheatrealliance.org.
