Those goofy looking Peruvian knit caps with the ear flaps which are the "granola" equivalent of a trucker's hat.

Tight-fitting shirts on people who don't have tight bodies. Especially tight fitting shirts that ride up, exposing jiggling flesh.

$200 designer jeans on people whose body shapes would be better served by better-fitting $25 jeans.

Leather pants on men. And many women. (Can't help put think of that episode of "Friends" every time I see them.)

Earrings and/or ponytails on men over 30.

Sweaters and sweatshirts with appliques on them - especially those Santa sweaters you see on tourists around Times Square.

The "Full Charlotte" - patterned golf shirt with logo of resort that hosted last corporate getaway paired with matching pleated dockers and boat shoes.

not exactly a faux pas, but something I don't like -- designs on jeans pockets.

I'm a walking faux-pas! I was once photographed as a Glamour "Don't"! Remember those?

You were a "don't"? Too cool!

I'm usually pretty put together but today in my slim pants and baggy oversized sweater I'm a mess. But I'm warm and cozy.

What's with the recent glut of "wash and wear" polyester clothes? I love Ann Taylor loft but lately much of their stuff has been 100% synthetic.

In that vein does anyone have tips as to where they shop to avoid being a fashion dud? I'm getting into a rut with my regular stores.

It's not where you shop, it's what you buy. If you know what is flattering for you, you can go any number of places. If you figure out what brands work on you that makes it easier. For a long time, I couldn't get a pair of pants at the Gap, now this year I seem to have found a pair that works. I usually do fairly well at AT & Loft with pants. Some brands are totally inconsistent though, so you just have to try on 100 things! (Oh, and a few accessories can go a long way in making something basic look current.)

I used to hate the Loft pants and skirts - everything was super high-waisted. I have a fairly short torso, so they used to make me look like I had pants up to my chin! They finally came up with a 3 level system that I think works:
normal, at the waist
slightly below the waist
low waisted

but back to the subject at hand:
sweatpants with elastic around the ankle. very faux pas

Pippi, what will make my super looong torso look shorter? I've been getting pants about 2 or so inches below my belly-button and I still have 10 inches of torso covered!

Pippi, you reminded me...

remember when leggings and pants with stirrups were all the rage? They were horrible!

Dego - I had so many stirr-up pants! All in black and a "formal" pair with satin tuxedo-pants stripes down the sides. Worn with an armful of black gasket-ring bracelets and a huge man's Swatch - fashion didn't get any better than that!

Ffof! Details! How did you see the "Don't" picture? What were you wearing? Were you thumbing blithely through "Glamour" or did your friends show you? Also, do they ask your permission when they take the picture? I've always wondered.

I have a "don't" that I learned the hard way - don't wear a white bathing suit into the water.

Ha! It was a sneakers and raincoat picture, on my way to work in the city - early 80's. It didn't actually make it in but they asked me to walk across the street a few times.

I had a bathing suit with a white band across the top. It was quite "something" the day I walked out of the ocean and my friends pointed out that there were a few teenaged boys who were "not able" to get out of the water

I don't know if this trend is hot up there, but down here Louis Vuitton is really big. I don't care for any of their stuff - it's not even real leather - but now the ultimate awful is white bags with crayon colored LVs all over them, and the traditional tan-on-brown insignia with shocking pink flowers superimposed

Got 'em both. Knock offs. I actually liked the one with the flowers.
Pippi has teased me about them in the past. Not only do I have the bags, but shoes and other accessories too. Yes, it's totally cheesy. No, I'd never spend my hard earned money on it, it was part of a business my mother-in-law and I had, and I had to wear the stuff. I actually grew to like some of it, much of it I put aside for years from now, when it's not so obvious I didn't spend $1000 on a bag. I am not part of the business anymore, so it's back to maybe getting one real Coach bag a year and seasonal bags at Gap or Banana.
Back to being me.

Actually the funniest part of that is the white line: my mother got a full-set, stilettos, bag and SUN VISOR (probably other stuff too...yeah a silk scarf) and wore it on a cruise 2 years ago and was the talk of the ship. The stuff had just come out, so it wasn't everywhere like now. You'd see all the stars in People with these bags, and my mom. She said women kept coming over to her the entire time.

Debby-

It's a safe bet that if initials are all over it it's a no-no.

Unless it's your own initials, then it's a yes-yes.

Tailored, flattering and washable is good.

Padded, initialed and dry-clean-only - what a drag and should come with an expiration date.

Oh, was I not clear?
I was not myself when I was wearing these items—I was the Pocketbook Whore!

Would you like to purchase a gently used pair of LV white Murikami mules, size 8 1/2? You'll be all the rage in Ft. Lauderdale!

Speaking of Logos...how is it that Juicy sweats are so popular? My mother-in-law lives in them and walks around with that huge JUICY in that horrible font on her . That has to be the worst new trend out there for any age—but it's worse when you're in your 50's and your has become a little more JUICY than you'd like to actually think it is. Makes me want to go home and shower!

Debby -

The white LV with the colored initials were from a few seasons ago in the city.

And, Shh, can you elaborate on the one Coach bag per year limit? I wasn't aware of it.... Coach is, IMHO, worth the money. My brothers and I chipped in and bought my mom a Coach wallet/checkbook cover over 20 years ago (we spent $80 on it). She's the type who stuffs it so full that she can't close it. And it still looks brand new.

I'm one of two people I know who actually owns a Coach roller bag, but I have crammed a week's worth of clothes into it & never had to check it. It's been thru the wars and has traveled over 100k miles, but it's still going....
