What's the story on that place? What kind of stuff do they carry? I've been driving past it for two years and I finally decided to stop in today and there's a sign in the window "Be back In 5 Minutes'

Unbelievable.... Needless to say, I waited for six minutes and then left.... I'll try again in another couple of years

This is a great store for kids, esp. the guys. My sons went there whenever they had money from about age 7 to 16 or so.

John carries a large selection of paints, tools, supplies, kits, whatever, for miniature railroads, radio-controlled cars, rockets, and whatever you call those endless battle games from Games Workshop and the like. In the past he has also had games ongoing certain times and days, classes, and demonstrations by his vendors. He is a great guy, very pleasant and always happy to see the kids!

Unfortunately (from my point of view) there's also a war memorabilia section and is (or was) one somewhat obnoxious employee, but the rest are cool.

try again sometime!

Great store. They used to be on Ridgewood road, and moved to their current location a few years back.

Ignatius,
Sorry you didn't get into the Maplewood Hobby that day. My husband frequents the place and really likes it.

In terms of waiting a few minutes...I worked in a store for a couple of years where I was the only employee. It's often difficult to go to the bathroom or the bank or grab something for lunch without locking up the store for a few minutes. As many small businesses can only afford to have one employee working at a time, I hope that you can patronize the store another time. Our two-towns thrive on the small businessman/woman. I hope this doesn't sour you from trying out the store and others like it.

The hobby shop's hours are a little unusual (or anyhow, more complicated than I could remember), so we found it paid to call ahead. Also, gozer is exactly right, there's often only 1 person there, so they might have to close for a few minutes from time to time.

I've been in there two times and I live very close to this store. Once out of curiosity. The second time for a purpose: in search of thomas the tank engine trains.

There's one guy working there who's got a great sense of humor in the vein of those two guys on cartalk, the npr show on Saturday mornings.

John is great with kids--he is really just a big kid himself. He is incredibly passionate about all sorts of hobbies and gameplaying, and the kids get a real jazz seeing an adult so into their world. He is patient, kind, and listens to them seriously and with great respect--and they respond in kind. Lately my kids are deep into Warhammer games and pieces, so they spend every available dollar there--makes for a great incentive to earn allowance, do extra chores, walk the neighbor's dog, etc.
