THE DECISION HAS BEEN MADE

THE SHOW WILL GO ON---

DUE TO WEATHER CONDITIONS, THE MUSIC WILL START EARLIER...7.15 AND DOOR'S STILL OPEN AT 7

THE BANDS WILL CUT A FEW MINUTES OF THEIR SETS. SO THAT WE CAN END EARLIER AND GET HOME SAFE AND SOUND}

No way to postpone it? It's a bit dangerous to have people drive in a blizzard at night.

From NOAA:

BLOWING AND DRIFTING SNOW. VISIBILITIES WILL BECOME POOR...WITH
WHITEOUT CONDITIONS AT TIMES. THOSE VENTURING OUTDOORS MAY BECOME
LOST OR DISORIENTED...SO PEOPLE IN THE WARNING AREA SHOULD STAY
INDOORS.

ANY TRAVEL IS STRONGLY DISCOURAGED. IF YOU LEAVE THE SAFETY OF BEING
INDOORS...YOU ARE PUTTING YOUR LIFE AT RISK.

THIS IS A LIFE-THREATENING WINTER WEATHER SITUATION! PREPARATIONS TO

'course, that won't stop us from venturing out to walk a block for some beer & pizza at Bunny's (a snow-day tradition)!

and to watch the blizzard-challenged try to make it up South Orange Avenue...

Walking is an option... except for the people from out of town who have already called to say they can't make it and sorry that you already bought the tickets... and the babysitter who called and said she won't be able to watch the kids but at least one of you will be able to go.

Anyone looking for tickets? It seems I will have a few.

At least I didn't cancel on the family I'm sitting for. I told them I'd still sit if they'd please picked me up. They have 4 wheel drive, I don't. They're picking me up.

You are a good aunt. In truth, our babysitter is also our kids' aunt and said she would still babysit if we brought the kids to her house – in Newark. Since driving around with the kids in this weather is not a desirable situation, she as much as cancelled. And when you are used to having the relatives babysit, you never search out the professional sitters (or the responsible teenagers). So only one of us will be attending the battle tonight. Assuming it is still on in the face of the road warnings they just gave on the news and weather that causes a plane to slide off the runway at JFK.

Oh, and one other note: If you have to drive, will there be any place to park your car? I am assuming the church parking lot will not be cleared.

A snow plow broke down in front of my house a short while ago. The driver finally got it started again but it took some time to do this. If a snow plow has difficulty navigating a relatively wide, well-traveled street, I am not sure how safe it is going to be for most of us to drive in bitter cold weather with gale force winds and heavy snow.

For those who can, walking would appear to be the best option.

Just pushed someone out of the snow. Granted, they had rear wheel drive, but it's going to get much worse. I think the only two options are walking and four-wheeling (and skiing). Driving is going to be treacherous.

So many people are going to be either disappointed or injured or both. Is there any possibility of rescheduling the event?

Governor just declared a state of emergency--which technically means that noone is allowed on the road except plows, cops, etc. from 8pm to 8am.

So, how many of you are going to be lawbreakers?

2kiddies-Thanks for the compliment but I'm not sitting for a relative. As far as I know the battle is still on. I'm only sitting in Maplewood, and I live in South Orange. The person I'm sitting for has no choice. They HAVE to go where they're going. At least they're going to pick me up. If my brother in law was home, he'd drive me. I am bringing my toothbrush in case I have to stay over. LOL

I LOVE the BOtheB!!! I can understand why cancelling it would be so disappointing. However, at this point, with the snow just getting heavier and roads getting worse, it seems irresponsible NOT to cancel it. Please reschedule???

Does anyone know if the full ticket price is a tax deduction? We really wanted to see the bands but if they go on with the show and don't reschedule, we might as well get something out of this apart from the good feeling of having supported a worthy cause in Habitat for Humanity.

I think the whole thing is tax deductible since I paid by check and wrote the check for the full ammount to Habitat for Humanity. We are going to try to make it. Since we have to pick up the babysitter (here in town) that will be the test if it is safe to drive to SO.Be safe everyone!

Hey All-
I'm just as annoyed as some of the other posters so I spoke with someone from OLS and was told the Battle will go on. I asked why it wasn't being rescheduled and was told it's because OLS diidn't have another date available.

It looks like the bands have no choice with having it tonight. True, the snow makes it difficult for many of us to get there and a lot of us will end up staying home; especially since there is now a state of emergency; but at least the money will go for a good cause.

Maybe next year thought will be given to holding it in the Spring?

Isn't there any other place where this event could be held? What size space would be needed? What special facilities would be required?

Neighbors,

I hope BoBB is not going on -- (1) you really can't flaunt a declared state of emergency, (2) persisting could be considered "reckless endangerment" of the safety of others, and (3) surely there are insurance liabilities for OLoS, as host, and the official organizing body (which may also be OLoS -- dunno).

"Emergency workers discover body of male, apparently a musician, plowed into a snow drift, only 100 yards from Our Lady of Sorrows, where benefit organizers for Habitat for Humanity, Newark, were alleged to have defied the Governor's declared State of Emergency. He appeared to have been pulling an electric bass, amp, and monitor speakers on an American Flyer sled. Habitat for Humanity, Newark, and Our Lady of Sorrows, Maplewood, each had no comment."

The Battle is over! Great show, plenty of food and beer, and the bestest was a good turn out. The roads were clear, no traffic, no problems...

We're at H2TA where the sidewalks are clear, plenty of parking on the plowed street, it's beautiful out, and it's starting to look like the sun may even come out...

Come on down and bring your own peanut butter cause we have the Jam...

Joan,

To my knowledge, there is no other venue in M/SO that can legally hold 500 people.

yep, we had a battle. Nice turn out. Thank you all. Sorry to those who could not make it. I wouldn't mind doing it again in another venue at another time of year.
Hope everyone made it home safe!

Then again, if the SOPAC was built...

Berry Festival:

What about the Columbia High School gymnasium? If the event were held there, the TV station could simulcast the event as a telethon for those who couldn't make it in person.

Now that's a great idea Joan!

Wait a minute... this being a charitable fundraiser, how about we add some paid commercials from local merchants? If nothing else the banners and signs used last night would sure increase the interest in supporting this important cause.

Jeff,
I would estimate that we had a hundred hearty souls. Quite amazing to see. They came, they danced, they stayed 'till the end.
Our thanks to the people that helped us set up, and then broke down and cleaned up at the end of the evening. Our thanks to the OLS snow removal guys that got the parking lot and sidewalks cleared. Our thanks to the merchants and vendors for their support! And obviously, our thanks to Our Lady of Sorrows RC Church for hosting the show.
The bands: 3rd Gear, Walk the Dog, Big Train and The Nightmares, and the sound company. Everyone that contributed to the night. We know that it was a stretch for all those involved, but that's what memories are made of. "Remember the big snow of 2005, yeah, well we went to a Battle of the Bands in the middle of it"..."you've got to be kidding!"

We certainly feel for everyone who bought a ticket and couldn't make it out last night. Our drummer couldn't even get out (BIG, BIG thank you to Michael Epstein who sat in with us on drums at literally the very last moment).

Like musicme, we'd certainly be willing to do this again in another venue at another time.

But most of all we want to thank the hardy (or is it crazy?) souls who showed up, cheered, danced, and had a good time. And best of all, we still managed to raise money for a good cause.
